Cougars Trump Kernels for Fourth Straight Win

April 20, 2018 - Midwest League (MWL) - Kane County Cougars News Release

Cedar Rapids, Iowa - The Kane County Cougars knocked off the Cedar Rapids Kernels, 5-2, on Friday night at Perfect Game Field.

The Cougars (7-5) strung together three straight hits to start the top of the third inning. Luis Basabe and Ryan Grotjohn started the rally with singles. The next batter, Yoel Yanqui, doubled to score Basabe and make it 1-0 Cougars. Luis Silveiro drove in a run on a sacrifice fly to right field, extending the lead to 2-0. The Cougars third run of the inning came on Ernie De La Trinidad's RBI single to center field.

The Cougars added an insurance run when Silverio tripled home Yanqui in the top of the fifth inning. In the top of the sixth, Manny Jefferson walked, followed by a Basabe single. With Ryan Grotjohn at the plate, a passed ball and throwing error were charged to Kernels' (6-2) catcher David Banuelos, allowing Manny Jefferson to score and lengthen the Cougars lead to 5-0.

The Kernels lone runs came on a two-run homer by Akil Baddoo in the top of the 7th inning.

Cougars' starter Mack Lemieux (1-2) twirled five scoreless innings to pick up his first win. The left-hander scattered five hits, struck out five and walk none. Erbert Gonzalez allowed the Baddoo home run, but gave the Cougars two innings of relief. Abraham Almonte tossed a perfect eighth with two strikeouts. Breckin Williams (1) walked a batter in the ninth, but posted a scoreless frame to earn the save.

Kernels' starter Blayne Enlow (0-1) took the loss, allowing four runs on eight hits in 4.2 innings. Jovani Moran retired the only man he faced in the fifth. Scheduled reliever Tyler Watson allowed an unearned run on four hits in three innings, striking out five and walking one. Moises Gomez flung a scoreless ninth with two strikeouts.

The Cougars continue the road trip with game two of a three-game series Saturday night at Cedar Rapids. The Cougars will send right-hander Brian Shaffer (0-1, 6.23) to the mound.
