Cougars Breeze Past Chiefs

Geneva, Illinois - The Kane County Cougars (57-58, 22-24) breezed by the Peoria Chiefs (67-48, 28-16) with a 12-5 win on Friday night at Northwestern Medicine Field.

The Cougars jumped on Chiefs starter Paul Balestrieri for five runs in the first inning. Jancarlos Cintron collected an RBI single, Ryan Grotjohn drove in two with a base knock and Eudy Ramos plated two more with a double.

In the third, the Cougars put the game to bed with seven tallies. Luis Lara recorded an RBI single. Jose Caballero cracked a three-run homer. Tra Holmes drove in two runs with a single. Ryan Grotjohn capped the inning with a two-run double.

The Chiefs grabbed two runs in the top of the fourth inning. Dennis Ortega, Zach Kirtley and Luken Baker roped three consecutive doubles to bring in the two runs. In the ninth, the Chiefs added three runs on Nolan Gorman's first career Midwest League homer.

Cougar starter Jayson McKinley (7-3) earned the win with 5.1 innings of two-run ball with five strikeouts and three walks. Bryan Valdez tossed 2.2 innings of scoreless ball out of the pen. Juan Torres allowed Gorman's homer in the ninth.

Balestrieri (7-5) gave up 11 runs on 10 hits over 2.2 innings in a losing decision. Zach Prednergast hurled 2.2 innings, surrendering an unearned run. Ben Yokley and Robbie Gordon combined to hold the Cougars scoreless over the final 2.2 frames.

The Cougars welcome in the Burlington Bees on Saturday night at Northwestern Medicine Field for the start of a four-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Fans will be treated to fireworks and can run the bases post-game. Purchase tickets by calling 630-232-8811 or on kccougars.com.
