Charleston RiverDogs News Release
(Charleston-SC)- Charleston won its fourth straight game, rallying from behind Monday to defeat the Capital City Bombers 8-6 in front of 1,789 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
With the victory, the RiverDogs (15-9) are locked into a first place tie with Columbus. Capital City (15-10) has now lost five of its last six games.
The RiverDogs trailed 6-2 in the sixth inning, when the comeback began. Delmon Young tattooed a fastball for a two-run homerun, his fourth of the season.
With two outs and no one on in the bottom of the seventh, Charleston went to work again. Jason Pridie connected on his third hit of the game, a double to left-center field. Elijah Dukes then sent a roller to third, but the throw to first was dropped, and the inning continued on the error.
Shane Hawk (1-1) came out of the Capital City bullpen to face Wes Bankston with the tying runs aboard. On Hawk's first pitch, Bankston delivered a clutch double to left field, his third double of the night, scoring Pridie and Dukes to tie the score.
On the next pitch, Young hammered a single to right field, bringing home Bankston to give the RiverDogs a 7-6 lead.
Colt Simmons followed with an RBI single of his own, capping the scoring and extending his league-leading hitting streak to 15 games.
Chad Orvella pitched the final two innings in relief to notch his fourth save of the season, as Charleston completed its largest comeback win of 2004. Orvella fanned Ryan Harvey with the tying runs aboard in the ninth inning to end the game.
Scott Vandermeer (2-0) picked up the victory out of the bullpen. He has not allowed an earned run this season in 10 appearances.
Blake Whealy had a home run and three RBI for the Bombers. Wilson Batista added three hits.
Bankston and Young each had 3 RBI for Charleston.
James Houser started for the RiverDogs and allowed two earned runs in 3 2/3 innings.
The RiverDogs have taken the first three games of the home-and-home four game set. Capital City won the first eight meetings between the two teams in 2003.
The RiverDogs will go for the sweep Tuesday night at Riley Park. The RiverDogs will send right-handed pitcher Jason Hammel (2-2) to the mound. Right-hander Matt Lindstrom (2-1) is expected to pitch for the Bombers. The game will follow The Citadel/Savannah State game at 4 p.m. at Riley Park. RiverDogs game time is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. on a 96 Wave Two-for Tuesday.
Tickets for all RiverDogs home games and the 45th Annual South Atlantic League All-Star Game, June 29 at Riley Park, are available in person at the Riley Park Box Office, by phone at (843) 577-DOGS (3647) and online at riverdogs.com and etix.com.
