Columbus Blue Jackets Re-Sign Derrick Walser and Darrel Scoville

Syracuse, NY (July 18, 2003) – The Syracuse Crunch announced today that the Columbus Blue Jackets have re-signed defensemen Derrick Walser and Darrel Scoville. As is club policy, terms were not disclosed.

Walser, 25, appeared in 28 games with the Crunch last season, recording 7 goals, 14 assists and 30 penalty minutes. In 53 games with the Blue Jackets during the 2002-03 season Walser netted 4 goals, 13 assists and 34 penalty minutes. He was second among Blue Jackets defensemen in goals and points. Walser recorded the first multi-point game of his NHL career November 7 at St. Louis with a goal and an assist. He also registered a career high with three assists January 11 at Calgary. Walser holds the Crunch record for most goals in a season by a defenseman with 23 (2001-02).

The New Glasgow, Nova Scotia native is entering his sixth season of professional hockey after being named the Canadian Major Junior Defenseman of the Year, notching 41 goals and 69 assists in 70 games with Rimouski (Quebec Major Junior Hockey League) in the 1997-98 campaign. Walser was signed by the Calgary Flames on Oct. 16, 1998 and played three seasons in the organization, primarily with their AHL affiliate in Saint John. The Blue Jackets signed Walser prior to the 2001-02 season and he recorded 23 goals and 38 assists in 73 games with Syracuse. He made his NHL debut that season, scoring his first NHL goal in two games with the Blue Jackets.

Scoville, 27, returns for his third season in the Blue Jackets organization. The Swift Current, Saskatchewan native saw his 2002-03 campaign cut short by injury, playing in just 24 games with the Crunch and two with the Blue Jackets. He recorded 4 goals and 9 assists with the Crunch and was held scoreless in his first two games in Columbus. In 2001-02, Scoville registered 5 goals and 16 assists in 51 games with Syracuse after being signed as a free agent on July 10, 2001.

A member of the Hockey East All-Rookie Team in 1996, Scoville played three seasons at Merrimack College. He recorded 17 goals and 62 assists in 107 games for the Warriors. Scoville was signed in the summer of 1998 by the Calgary Flames and spent three years in the organization. He made his NHL debut in 1999-2000, playing six games for the Flames. His best season came in 2000-01 where he recorded 11 goals and 32 assists in 76 games for Saint John.
