Colorado Rapids Send Klute to Columbus for Allocation Money, #14 Pick

January 16, 2015 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Colorado Rapids News Release

Chris Klute is heading to Columbus Crew SC as part of the transaction executed during the first round of the 2015 Major League Soccer SuperDraft.

The 24-year-old was traded in exchange for significant allocation money and Crew SC's 14th overall selection at the draft. The Rapids were originally placed at 19 in the first round of the draft. No 2016 SuperDraft pick was a part of the trade.

"First of all, I'd like to thank (Chris) Klute for all his hard work over the past year (under me)," said Rapids head coach, Pablo Mastroeni. "I think he's a player with a lot of upside.

"We were able to shore-up (Axel) Sj - berg in the 14th pick and move up five slots, but more importantly - as we continue to re-shape this group - we were able to get a good deal of financial incentive in future allocation and so it gives us a lot of flexibility to continue to build this group moving forward."

Klute spent two full seasons with Colorado, having made his Rapids and MLS debut in the final match of the 2012 season against Houston Dynamo. He was acquired from Atlanta Silverbacks in September 2012, initially on a one-year loan. The move was made permanent in July the following year.

In total, he made 57 appearances (55 starts) for the Rapids and was named the club's Defensive Player of the Year in 2013.
