Toronto, ON - The Toronto Rock (7-7) just couldn't find the net in an 11-7 loss to the Colorado Mammoth (10-4) on Friday night at Air Canada Centre. The Rock didn't get a single goal from any of their forwards and have dropped into a four-way tie for first place in the East Division.
"We competed and battled as a team and you win and lose as a team," said Rock Head Coach Matt Sawyer following the loss. "We need to be able to count on everybody and we had a few too many guys who were off their game up front tonight."
Perhaps the offensive output in the first quarter should have been a sign of things to come as Colorado shutout the Rock 3-0 in the first fifteen minutes.
After Colorado struck first in the second quarter making it 4-0, Toronto's transition game got the Rock back in the game with three consecutive goals as Latrell Harris, Bill Hostrawser and Brad Kri all scored. A Mammoth goal late in the half made the score 5-3 at the break.
The second half started off with each team tallying once before Challen Rogers scored twice to tie the game 6-6 giving Rock fans a brand new game heading into the final quarter.
Colorado quickly jumped back in front just 27 seconds into the fourth quarter and never looked back. The Rock did make it 8-7 but the Mammoth scored three more times, including an empty net goal, before all was said and done.
All seven Rock goals came from defenders. Harris and Rogers each scored twice with singles going to Brodie Merrill, Kri and Hostrawser. Nick Rose stopped 40 of the 50 shots he faced and turned in another solid performance in the Rock cage.
The Rock will be on the road next Sunday afternoon in Georgia to face the Swarm as they try and get their first win of the season against the defending NLL champions.
