Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - The Cedar Rapids Kernels took a 3-0 lead into the ninth inning Saturday in front of 2,774 fans at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium, but the Peoria Chiefs rallied for five runs to secure a 5-3 win. Edwar Colina posted six scoreless innings for Cedar Rapids (32-36) and was in line for the victory until the late outburst by Peoria (38-31).

The Chiefs guaranteed a chance to clinch a playoff berth with a win Sunday following their comeback victory Saturday. Peoria opened the scoring in the ninth with Irving Lopez's sacrifice fly against Blayne Enlow. A wild pitch from Jared Finkel (3-3) allowed JR Davis to come home, and Yariel Gonzalez later tied the contest with an RBI single. With two outs and the bases loaded, Matt Fiedler hit a two-run double down the left-field line that lifted Peoria to its winning margin of 5-3.

Colina combined with Enlow to keep Peoria off the scoreboard over the first eight innings of play. Colina faced one batter over the minimum and worked around five hits within a quality start. Saturday's tilt also marked Colina's first appearance without a walk this season.

The Kernels scored in each of the first two frames to build an early advantage. Jose Miranda grounded into a first-inning force out that allowed Royce Lewis to tally the go-ahead run. Robert Molina added a sacrifice fly in the second that plated Andrew Bechtold for a 2-0 lead.

Akil Baddoo homered during the bottom of the seventh and increased Cedar Rapids' edge to 3-0. Baddoo collected his seventh round-tripper on a two-out line drive over the right-field wall.

Alvaro Seijas tossed a career-high eight innings and allowed three runs to earn the victory and improve to 2-3. Thomas St. Clair pitched a perfect ninth inning for his team-best fifth save.

Cedar Rapids' 2018 first-half finale is a rubber game slated for 2:05 p.m. Sunday afternoon. The probable pitchers are Kernels right-hander Jordan Balazovic (1-0, 0.84) and Chiefs right-hander Paul Balestrieri (2-3, 5.00). Chris Kleinhans-Schulz will call the game on 1450 KMRY AM and 93.1 KMRY FM and also online at www.kmryradio.com, www.kernels.com, and MiLB.TV.

The first 1,000 fans through the gates receive a free Goodwill cheer cone. Cedar Rapids will wear special Father's Day jerseys that will be auctioned off during the game with proceeds to benefit Goodwill. After the contest, fans can run the bases, play catch in the outfield, and get autographs from the Kernels courtesy of Prairie Farms and 104.5 KDAT. Western Fraternal Life Kids Eat Free Sunday offers all kids aged 12 and under a free voucher for a hot dog, popcorn, and 12 oz. soda or bottled water.
