Hudson Valley Renegades News Release

WAPPINGERS FALLS, NY (July 23, 2013) - Two straight games decided by 4-3 scores. A win for the 'Gades, and a win for the 'Cats. So far this season, Hudson Valley and Tri-City have saved their best for each other by splitting the first four meetings in the series. In the most recent installment of this fun rivalry, the Renegades slipped by with a 4-3 victory in front of 3,790 at Dutchess Stadium on Tuesday night. Just one night after the Renegades left 10 runners on base and finished 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position, they got timely hitting from James Harris and Omar Narvaez to get one back.

Both teams put a pair of runners on base in the first but could not score as Renegades starter Kevin Brandt struck out two batters in each of the first two innings. He got some run support in the home second after Granden Goetzman led off with his team-leading fourth triple to right-center. Two batters later, Harris sent a hard groundball to the second baseman Tony Kemp, who knocked it down to get the out. But Goetzman crossed the plate to give the 'Gades an early 1-0 lead.

More of the same in the fourth after Narvaez led off with a single against ValleyCats starter Michael Feliz (3-2). A one-out single by John Alexander and a wild pitch moved the runners to second and third for Harris. This time he sent a groundball to the left side for the shortstop Chan Moon, who only had one play at first. Narvaez scored on Harris' second straight RBI groundout to make it 2-0.

Brandt threw a season-high six shutout innings and left with a 2-0 lead as Justin Choate emerged from the Renegades bullpen. After a perfect seventh, he got a scare when Kemp led off with a double to right center. D'Andre Toney's single put runners at the corners before Conrad Gregor's RBI single made it 2-1. A 5-4-3 double play off the bat of Michael Martinez then pushed Toney to third as the tying run. After a walk to Ernesto Genoves, Jon Kemmer grounded out to second to retire the side.

In the bottom of the inning, singles by Johnny Field and Darryl George and a walk to Ty Young loaded the bases with one out. Narvaez then rolled a slow grounder through the right side to plate up two huge insurance runs to give the 'Gades a 4-1 lead.

Looking for his team-leading third save in the ninth, Choate walked Jake Rodriguez and allowed a single to Ryan Dineen to bring the tying run to the plate. After a pair of flyball outs, the runners tagged up to second and third, and Toney hit a two-run single to cut the deficit to 4-3. Down to their final out, Gregor grounded out to Choate to end the ballgame and put the ValleyCats away for good.

NOTES: Brandt (4-2) won his third straight start, picking up six strikeouts in each one...Harris had his second two-RBI game of the season despite being the only Renegade to not reach base...before Field's single in the eighth, the ValleyCats Andrew Thurman had retired seven in a row with six strikeouts...the Renegades improved to 8-5 in the opening games of series.

The teams return to Dutchess Stadium on Wednesday night at 7:05 PM. A couple of lefties take the hill as Hudson Valley's Chris Kirsch (1-1, 4.00 ERA) counters Tri-City's Chris Cotton (2-1, 0.73 ERA) in the middle game of three.
