Harrisburg, PA â In preparation for a two-day span in which they will play two of the top teams in the Pro Soccer League, the Harrisburg City Islanders have augmented their depth with the signing of defender Moffat Oduor and the loan acquisitions of goalkeepers Michael Behonick and Chris Doyle, both of the A-League's Charleston Battery, the team announced on Thursday.
Oduor will be with the Islanders this Friday as they take on the Charlotte Eagles in Charlotte, NC, and on Saturday as they head to Wilmington, NC, to face the defending PSL champion Hammerheads. Behonick will suit up on Friday, and Doyle will join the team on Saturday.
Oduor, 26, began his professional career in 2002 with the Carolina Dynamo, then of the Third Division (now of the Premier Development League), and logged one goal in nine games (850 minutes played). He appeared in five games (379 minutes) for the Long Island Roughriders in 2003. A native of Eldoret, Kenya, Oduor began his collegiate career at the University of Charleston (WV), where he played his first three years, earning Division II All-American honors as a junior. For his senior season (2001), Oduor transferred to Furman University, a perennially competitive Division I school in Greenville, SC. Prior to coming to the United States, the 6-1, 185-pound Oduor earned time with the Under-20 Kenyan National Team.
Behonick, 23, is in his second season with Charleston. The 6-3, 190-pound netminder was a three-year starter at American University, and was selected by D.C. United in the 2002 Major League Soccer SuperDraft. A broken hand sustained early in the season kept him on the sidelines for the 2003 season, and he has yet to play in 2004.
The 6-5, 205-pound Doyle is also in his second campaign with the Battery, having gone 1-1-4 with a 0.87 goals against average and two shutouts in six games in 2003. He has not played in 2004. The 24-year-old was a four-year starter at the University of Hartford.
Both Behonick and Doyle will return to the Battery following their respective games. The absence of keeper Peter Boyer, who will miss the weekend due to personal reasons, compelled the Islanders to arrange the loans. Dave Kern, who started the team's season-opening 5-2 win over Northern Virginia on April 17, is on the trip with the team.
The Harrisburg City Islanders are playing their inaugural season in the Pro Soccer League (PSL), a division of the United Soccer Leagues (USL). The club's 20-game regular season (10 home, 10 away) opened on April 17 and will conclude on Saturday, August 14, at home against the Charlotte Eagles.
