Chubb Back in Rancho, Will Lead Quakes in 2020
Rancho Cucamonga, CA - The Los Angeles Dodgers officially announced their minor league coaching staffs and for the first time in franchise history, the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes will have a former Quake player at the helm as their manager.
Austin Chubb, who wore a Rancho Cucamonga uniform in the championship year of 2015, will return to LoanMart Field, as he'll become the Quakes' third "skipper" in as many seasons.
"It's a little surreal to come back to Rancho as a manager just five years after playing there," said Chubb. "I'm excited! We'll do our best to continue the winning tradition for the fans."
Chubb, who immediately got into coaching at the conclusion of that 2015 campaign, enters his fifth year as a coach in the Dodgers' system. Last season, the 30-year-old was named Pioneer League Manager of the Year, after guiding the Ogden Raptors to a franchise-best 54-22 mark.
Chubb played collegiately at Florida Southern and was drafted in the 21st round of the 2012 draft by the Washington Nationals. The Lake Mary, Florida native appeared in a total of 91 minor league games, including 10 with the Quakes in 2015, where he swatted two of his five career home runs and drove in four of his 30 career RBIs.
The former catcher played under former big-league backstop Bill Haselman, who managed the Quakes to their second title in franchise history in 2015.
"Has continues to be an incredible mentor for me and is one of the reasons why I'm coaching in the Dodgers' system today. He's a great resource and I've learned a lot from him."
The first-year manager's staff has been finalized as well, with hitting coach Dustin Kelly being the only returning member of last year's coaches. Kelly will be going into his second year with the Quakes and his third with the Dodgers' organization.
The rest of the Rancho newcomers on Chubb's staff include pitching coach Ryan Dennick (third year with the Dodgers), coach Jason Bourgeois (second year), Athletic Trainer Jesse Guffey, Development coach David Anderson, performance coach Sam Nickelsen and video associate Kyle Lussier.
Mark Kertenian, who guided the Quakes in 2019, will be one of the coaches at Triple-A Oklahoma City under manager Travis Barbary.
The new coaching staff and the rest of the 2020 Rancho Cucamonga Quakes will take the field for the first time on Thursday, April 9th, as the Quakes open the season at LoanMart Field against the division-rival Inland Empire 66ers. Ticket packages are available for purchase at rcquakes.com or by phone at 909-481-5000. We hope to see you at LoanMart Field very soon...Go Quakes!
