The Chiefs will play in their second preseason tournament of the year, travelling to Kennewick for two games in the Red Lion Hotels Pre-Season Tournament. They take on the Kootenay Ice at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, September 6 and the Tri-City Americans at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 7. The teams have not faced each other yet this preseason.
NEWS AND NOTES
SPREADING THE WEALTH ... The Chiefs scored seven goals in the Everett preseason tournament, all by different players. In total, 11 different players registered a point in the Chiefs' first three 2013 Preseason games.
KEANU PLEASE PASS ME THE PUCK ... Rookie forward Keanu Yamamoto took advantage of his first career WHL Preseason action in Everett over Labor Day weekend, tallying four assists in three games.
BURT JOINS COACHING STAFF ... The Chiefs announced the addition of Assistant Coach Scott Burt to the hockey staff. Burt was an assistant for the Alaska Aces for the past four years, the first two serving as Player/Assistant. Burt played for four different teams during his WHL career from 1994-98, including under current Chiefs Head Coach Don Nachbaur as a 17-year-old on the Seattle Thunderbirds in 1994. Burt played professionally for six different teams, scoring 203 goals, 463 points and 1,316 penalty minutes. He won the Kelly Cup, the ECHL championship, three times as a player.
MOULTON EXTENDED ... Director of Player Personnel Chris Moulton signed a three-year extension through the 2015-16 season. Moulton originally joined the Chiefs Organization in June, 2005, and signed a three-year extension in 2010.
KICHTON TO THE JETS ... 2012-13 WHL Defenseman of the Year and Chiefs captain Brenden Kichton was selected in the 7th Round of the 2013 NHL Draft by the Winnipeg Jets. Kichton finished his WHL career as the Chiefs' franchise leader in points by a defenseman with 268, 2nd all-time in career assists with 201, and 2nd all-time in career games played with 333.
CHIEFS IMPORT TWO ... The Chiefs selected two forwards in the 2013 CHL Import Draft. Adam Hascic, selected 46th overall, comes from Trencin, Slovakia. He scored 20 goals and 41 points in 27 games with the EC Salzburg U18 team in Austria last year, adding another four points in eight games with their U20 club. Hascic scored two goals in five games with Slovakia's U17 team as they competed in the 2013 Under-17 World Hockey Challenge. Dominic Zwerger, of Dornbirn, Austria, was the Chiefs' 2nd Round selection, 106th overall. Zwerger played in the Swiss Junior League last season, with Davos' U17 and U20 clubs. He scored a combined 24 goals and 51 points. Zwerger also played with Austria's U18 and U20 national teams.
HAT TRICK HOLMBERG ... Mitch Holmberg, a 20-year-old forward from Sherwood Park, AB, recorded three hat tricks last season with the Chiefs; one on Bud Light Opening Night vs. Tri-City on September 29th, one vs. Seattle on December 14th and one vs. Kamloops on February 1st. Holmberg leads all Chiefs returning scorers with 39 goals and 80 points last season, including a team-leading 12 power play goals. His 1.21 points per game led the entire club, and he ranked 21st in the WHL in regular season scoring. Holmberg's six-game goal streak between September 22 and October 10 was the 5th longest goal streak of all WHL players last season.
SAWYER TO ASSIST ...Former captain and assistant coach Kevin Sawyer will return to the Chiefs coaching staff again this season as a part-time Assistant Coach. Sawyer played for the Chiefs from 1992-95 and remains the club's career record holder for penalty minutes with 989.
HOME OPENER ...The Chiefs will open the home portion of the regular season on Saturday, September 28th versus the Tri-City Americans on Bud Light Opening Night. The regular season begins a week earlier when Spokane travels to Tri-City on Saturday, September 21st. Mike Boyle will go on the air at 6:30 with Spokane Chiefs Hockey Tonight on 1510 KGA.
CHIEFS HOST AMERICANS AT EWU ... Spokane will host their only home pre-season game at the University Recreation Center (URC) in Cheney, WA, home of the Eastern Washington University Eagles, on Wed., Sept. 11th. Game time is 7:05 p.m. and doors will open at 6:05 p.m. General Admission tickets are available through the Chiefs Ticket Office and the URC.
PRE-SEASON SCHEDULE ... Spokane has a seven game pre-season schedule which began with a trio of games over Labor Day weekend in Everett, at the Everett Silvertips Holiday Inn Pre-season Classic; Fri., Aug. 30th, versus Portland, Sat., Aug. 31st, versus Everett, and Sun., Sept. 1st against Seattle. The Chiefs will play in the Tri-City Americans Red Lion Hotels Pre-Season Tournament this coming weekend with games on Fri., Sept. 6th against Kootenay and Sat., Sept. 7th against Tri-City in Kennewick. The Chiefs' pre-season schedule will end with their home game on the 11th versus Tri-City (hosted in Cheney at EWU) and another trip to Tri-City on Sat., Sept. 14th.
