Peoria Chiefs News Release

Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs overcame an early deficit and then rode a solid effort from the bullpen to a 5-4 win over Cedar Rapids Friday. With the win, Peoria collected just their second win of the season over the Kernels in ten tries.

Peoria fell behind early on after a Seth Gray base hit brought home the game's first run to make it 1-0 Kernels. Then in the second frame, Anthony Prato notched a two-run single to expand the lead to 3-0.

In the third, the Chiefs packed a punch. Zade Richardson was plunked and Masyn Winn racked up a double before Matt Chamberlain launched an extra-base knock of his own to plate two runs and make it a 3-2 ballgame. A pair of Kernels errors later in the inning gifted Peoria two additional runs to jump in front 4-3. The Chiefs then tacked one on in the fourth courtesy of a Zade Richardson RBI knock that grew the Chiefs lead to two, 5-3.

After Peoria starter Michael McGreevy struggled early, the young right-hander settled in. The Midwest League's leader in innings pitched retired 11 of the final 12 batters he faced and whiffed seven, en route to his second win of the season.

The Kernels inched closer in the seventh after Kyler Fedko deposited a home run over the wall to make it a 5-4 score, but that was as close as the Kernels got. The Chiefs bullpen combination of Michael YaSenka and Ryan Loutos sparkled, as they tossed four combined frames of one-run baseball to secure the win. The pair struck out eight and the Peoria staff whiffed 15 Kernels hitters, one off their season-high, which they recorded on Thursday night.

Peoria will look to stay in the win column tomorrow, when Gordon Graceffo takes the bump. First pitch is slated for 6:35 p.m., with a fireworks show set to follow the contest.
