Chiefs Fall Short in 2-0 Loss to IronPigs
July 3, 2013 - International League (IL1)
Syracuse Mets News Release
The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, lost 2-0 to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs on Wednesday night from Coca-Cola Park. Left-hander Danny Rosenbaum allowed just two earned runs in six innings, but IronPigs southpaw Greg Smith and a pair of relievers held Syracuse scoreless.
Lehigh Valley (46-40) broke open a scoreless tie in the fourth inning against Rosenbaum. With one out, Cesar Hernandez singled and Darin Ruf walked to put a pair of runners aboard. After a Josh Fields fielder's choice groundout forced Ruf at second base, right fielder Leandro Castro poked a single to right field, giving the IronPigs a 1-0 lead.
They'd add to the tally in the fifth inning. With one out, Tyson Gillies singled before advancing to second base on a sacrifice bunt from pitcher Greg Smith. Third baseman Freddy Galvis followed with a line-drive single to left field, scoring Gillies for a 2-0 Lehigh Valley advantage.
Syracuse (34-51), meanwhile, didn't score against Smith in six-and-two-thirds innings, with the left-hander exiting after a one-hour, three-minute rain delay. Southpaw Cesar Jimenez and right-hander Luis Garcia tossed the final two-and-one-thirds innings for the IronPigs.
The teams will shift their series to Syracuse on Thursday for a 5:05 Fourth of July doubleheader. Chiefs right-handers Jeff Mandel and Tanner Roark are slated to start in the twin bill.
