Chicago Sky Launches Beyond Basketball Pitch Competition, Will Award $90,000 to Local Businesses
CHICAGO - The Chicago Sky announced today its first-ever Beyond Basketball business boot camp and pitch competition, which will award a total of $90,000 to six deserving minority-owned businesses in the Chicago area.
"We know that we need to do more than speak about systemic change and social justice. It was time to take tangible, actionable steps towards making the change we hope to see," said Sky President and CEO Adam Fox. "We understand that supporting local small businesses by helping make them sustainable is a cornerstone to bringing about systemic change within our community, so we are very proud of this initiative and very proud of the commitment from our partners who have helped support this. We look forward to continuing to take these actionable steps in the future."
Powered by University of Chicago Medicine and Magellan Corporation, the event is the first of its kind for the WNBA and extends upon the Sky's commitment to strengthening local businesses that have been negatively impacted by COVID-19.
Beginning on Friday, Oct. 23, the four-week business "boot camp" will provide resources, workshops, preparation and mentorship by leading executives at global brands and investment firms such as PNC, Motorola, Mesirow Financial, and CIBC, Clayco, and GCM Grosvenor.
Six businesses will be selected to participate, with one-hour weekly sessions leading up to a final pitch competition on Friday, Nov. 27, in which the six finalists will have the opportunity to pitch to a panel of judges. The winner of the pitch contest will receive a minimum cash prize of $10,000, with a total of $90,000 being distributed to all six companies selected as a financial prize for completing the program.
Business owners from all industries are encouraged to submit their company to be entered into the program, with applications being accepted now on the Chicago Sky's website. The application window will end on Sunday, October 11, at 5:00 p.m. CT.
