Chicago Red Stars News Release
CHICAGO - The Red Stars earned a point on the road after a 1-1 draw against the Pride, managing to stay undefeated through five matches. Forward Sofia Huerta equalized in the second half, tallying her fourth goal of the season, while Jen Hoy grabbed her second assist in as many games.
It was Orlando who took control of the first few minutes of the match, earning two solid looks in the first 10 minutes by forwards Jasmyne Spencer and Alex Morgan.
After creating early chances, Orlando would secure the first goal of the match as Spencer found Morgan streaking into the box. With a strategic touch with her left foot, she distanced herself from defender Sam Johnson and blasted it to the far post netting, earning the Pride's first-ever lead over the Red Stars in the 24th minute.
Orlando nearly got a second in the first half, but couldn't connect after a rocket by Jamia Fields shook the crossbar to eventually be cleared, but to a waiting Morgan, who would take a shot by that was tipped over the bar by Naeher. The Pride took their 1-0 over the Red Stars into halftime.
In the second half, Chicago found more possession, pressing high up the field. It paid off in the 53rd minute as Jen Hoy slotted a pass to Huerta just near the top of the box. With one touch to her left, Huerta bent a ball around Orlando goalkeeper Audrey Bledsoe into the upper 90 for the 1-1 equalizer.
Just 20 minutes later, Huerta snuck in behind the backline and received a perfect ball, but her fell to the arms of Bledsoe for the easy save.
But with minutes left in the second half, Orlando was able to find a scramble in the box, making several shots on goal, but thanks to the heroic efforts of Naeher, Chicago was able to slide by with a 1-1 draw in Orlando, as the Pride earned their first point against the Red Stars.
