Charlotte Checkers News Release

Charleston S.C. - The Checkers had another chance to put the Stingrays on the brink of elimination but were unable to do it for the second consecutive game losing 4-1. With the win, South Carolina fully erased the Checkers two game lead to tie the series at two games each as the pivotal game five takes place tomorrow.

The Stingrays came out during the first period and skated to a two-goal lead after twenty minutes. They did it on the strength of a couple nice bounces in front of Checkers netminder Jeff Jakaitis. The first shot by Travis Morin on a Stingrays power play went off a Checkers body in front and into the net at 13:24. Later, South Carolina forward Maxime Lacroix skated into the Checkers zone and wristed a shot through a screen that Jakaitis never picked up. It found its way in at 15:23 and the period came to its conclusion with a 2-0 advantage for the home team.

South Carolina used the second period to extend their lead by two goals and they were both scored by Matt Scherer. The first of two came off a backhand shot that eluded Jakaitis on the short-side at 14:33. With a 3-0 lead in the game, Scherer took advantage of a turnover inside the Checkers zone blasting a slapper past the Charlotte netminder at 18:30.

With a 4-0 lead in the third period, the Stingrays did their best to stop any oncoming rush from Charlotte. They perfected that with the exception of the lone goal by the Checkers. Defenseman Ken Scuderi redirected a Marty Guerin pass past a helpless Jonathan Boutin at 10:25. The lone goal wasn't enough to bridge the gap and the Stingrays skated off with a 4-1 victory and a tied series. Checkers used backup goaltender Maxime Daigneault to finish the final period and he stopped the 13 shots that came his way.

With the Stingrays win it means the Checkers will host game six at the Extreme Ice in Indian Trail on Sunday, April 19 at 7:00 p.m. Fans can purchase their tickets by logging onto www.gocheckers.com or visiting The Extreme Ice Center in Indian Trail, N.C.
