Carolina Mudcats News Release

Chattanooga, TN --- Griff Erickson hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth to score Scott Van Slyke with the winning run as first-place Chattanooga defeated Carolina 7-6 at AT&T Field on Wednesday afternoon.

The Mudcats (23-28) tied the game 6-6 in the ninth on a chop single to center by Yasmani Grandal to bring home Didi Gregorius from second base. The Lookouts (31-20) game-winning rally started in the bottom half thanks to a triple to right-center by Van Slyke, who finished the game 4-5. After a pair of intentional walks by Donnie Joseph, Erickson sent a deep flyball to Cody Puckett in left field, bringing home Van Slyke with the game-winning run.

With the victory, the Mudcats fell eight games behind the Lookouts with 18 to play in the regular season, including the next three games to close out the series.

Carolina took an early lead in the second on a bunt single by Miguel Rojas, but the Lookouts scored three runs against starter Josh Ravin in the third inning. Ravin lasted three innings, using 79 pitches and walking five.

Reliever Justin Freeman replaced Ravin, allowing three runs over his two innings, but Freeman ignited a three-run rally in the top of the fifth, tripling over Alex Castellanos head in right field.

With the game tied in the fifth, Elian Herrera singled past Henry Rodriguez to give the Lookouts a 6-5 lead. That advantage lasted until the ninth when Gregorius walked on four pitches. Quintin Berry sacrificed before Grandal hit a two-hopper to center to even the score.

The series continues on Thursday night with Justin Lehr starting against Chris Withrow at 7:15 PM ET.
