Champions Deal Helms After Trade Request

March 27, 2018 - Canadian American League (Can-Am) - Ottawa Champions News Release

OTTAWA - Another offseason deal took place earlier this week that saw the Ottawa Champions deal OF MATT HELMS to a team in the American Association.

Honouring an earlier trade request by the outfielder, they dealt Helms to the Cleburne Railroaders in exchange for a player to be named later.

Helms was grateful for his time with the Champions, but the desire to finish his career closer to his family eventually led to him requesting a trade to Ottawa manager Hal Lanier.

"Matt wanted to be traded to Cleburne because he wanted his family to be able to see him play more often," Lanier explained. "We will truly miss him but understand his reasons for wanting to be closer to his family. Wish him nothing but the best, thanks for all He did for the Ottawa Champions."

Helms played two full seasons in a Champions uniform, placing second all-time in hits (211), and third in doubles (34). He finished the 2017 season as one of the Can-Am League leaders offensively, hitting .290 with seven home runs and 35 RBI.
