TORONTO, ON â August 16, 2003 â The Canadian Football League (CFL) announced today that it has taken over control of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats franchise, placing the team, along with the Toronto Argonauts, under League management and leadership until new ownership agreements are in place. The CFL has also obtained a Court Order appointing Richter & Partners Inc. as the interim receiver of the former holders of the Hamilton franchise.
Commissioner Tom Wright acknowledged the efforts of George Grant and David Macdonald during their tenure as owners of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats: "We recognize the significant contributions of Mr. Grant and Mr. Macdonald in stewarding this historic franchise, including their Grey Cup Championship in 1999," stated Commissioner Wright.
In looking toward the future, the Commissioner expressed confidence in the growing strength of the CFL in Canada and committed the League's resources to further development of the Ontario market:
"The Board of Governors has given its strong support to the ownership project in Southern Ontario. We will emerge a stronger League on all fronts and in all nine CFL markets at the conclusion of these efforts," said Commissioner Wright.
