Celebration Delayed as Curve Fall in 15 Innings

August 28, 2017 - Eastern League (EL1) - Altoona Curve News Release

RICHMOND, Va. -- The Altoona Curve came from behind late to force extra innings but ultimately lost, 2-1, in 15 innings to the Richmond Flying Squirrels on Monday nigh at The Diamond.

The Curve (70-63) still saw their magic number drop to one, thanks to a pair of 12-inning losses by Akron and Erie.

The Flying Squirrels (59-74) won the game with a walk-off single by Brandon Bednar off of Tomas Morales (Loss, 0-1) in the bottom of the 15th inning.

Morales, a catcher by trade, pitched a 1-2-3 14th inning in his first appearance on the mound in his career. In the 15th, he issued a pair of walks and hit a batter to load the bases with no outs before a line-out by Hunter Cole recorded the first out.

Bednar bounced a single through the legs of Morales and into center field to plate the winning run.

Richmond's Caleb Gindl (Win, 1-0), who began the game in center field, worked around a hit and three walks to pitch two scoreless innings.

Trailing 1-0 entering the eighth inning, pinch-hitter Jonathan Schwind clubbed a one-out double and came around to score the tying run with a two-strike, two-out single by Pablo Reyes.

Richmond opened the scoring in the first inning with three straight hits to open the night for Alex McRae. Gindle singles to open the inning and moved to third on a double by C.J. Hinojosa. Myles Schroder followed with an RBI single, but McRae left it at one run after getting a double play.

McRae worked six innings and allowed one run on seven hits with three walks and two strikeouts.

The Curve bullpen held Richmond off the scoreboard into extras. Sean Keselica worked a scoreless seventh, Johnny Hellweg followed with two scoreless innings and Luis Heredia worked through three innings with four strikeouts. Jake Brentz pitched a scoreless 13th inning.

Richmond used seven pitchers before turning to Gindle in the 14th.

The Curve offense managed just six hits in the loss. Reyes finished the game 2-for-7 with an RBI. Wyatt Mathisen went 2-for-6. Jerrick Suiter went 0-for-4 but walked three times.

Altoona can clinch a playoff spot with a win on Tuesday night at The Diamond. Right-hander Austin Coley (4-4, 3.33) will be on the mound for the Curve, opposed by Richmond right-hander Cory Taylor (4-10, 4.35). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. at The Diamond.
