Winston-Salem Dash News Release

KINSTON, N.C. - Behind three solo home runs and a strong outing from Dash starter Dylan Cease, Winston-Salem claimed its series opener over Down East with a 6-0 victory at Grainger Stadium on Friday night.

Joel Booker, Zach Remillard and Luis Basabe all led off innings with solo home runs, which lifted the Dash (23-17) to a win over the Southern Division rival Wood Ducks (23-18). With the win, Winston-Salem moves into a tie for first place in the Southern Division with the Buies Creek Astros.

In his third start against the Wood Ducks this season, Cease (5-2) dominated. The White Sox fifth-best prospect per MLB Pipeline tossed six innings and secured the win, allowing just two hits and no runs and striking out six.

The Dash hitters jumped ahead early against Down East starter Walker Weickel (1-3), plating a run in the first inning. With two outs in the inning, Blake Rutherford and Micker Adolfo worked back-to-back walks to put runners on first and second. Gavin Sheets followed with an RBI single to center that scored Rutherford and put the Dash up 1-0.

Winston-Salem added on another run in the top of the third, as Booker led off the third with a walk, then stole second with Basabe at the plate. Booker then advanced to third on Basabe's single. A sacrifice fly out from Adolfo scored Booker to expand Winston-Salem's lead to 2-0.

The Dash began to showcase their power in the fourth and fifth innings. Remillard led off the top of the fourth with a solo home run to left center field, good for his first home run as a member of the Dash. In the top of the fifth inning, Booker followed suit, leading off the inning with another solo homer to extend Winston-Salem's lead to 4-0.

The trend continued for the Dash in the top of the seventh, as Basabe led off the frame with a solo shot to right field that provided more insurance for Winston-Salem by putting the Dash up 5-0.

In the top of the eighth inning, Basabe added his third hit of the night with a double to center field that scored Booker, who worked a two-out walk against Down East reliever C.D. Pelham. Basabe was thrown out at home while trying to advance on a Rutherford single, but the Dash still headed to the bottom of the eighth up by a wide margin of 6-0.

After Cease departed at the end of the sixth inning, Danny Dopico took over in the bottom of the seventh and tossed three scoreless innings to close out the shutout victory for Winston-Salem and secure the save.
