A scoring summary is available HERE.
The Sea Dogs opened the scoring two minutes into the game.
A shot from the right circle was deflected on its way to the net. Goalie Mathieu Bellemare made the initial save, but could not recover to deny Safin, who chipped the rebound over the netminder's left pad.
Salda made it a 2-0 game midway through the period with a tremendous individual effort.
The Czech blueliner carried the puck up the left wing and gained the Shawinigan blueline. He cut into the middle and had his first chance go off a skate. But Salda grabbed the rebound and slid it under a surprised Bellemare.
Saint John struck again less than two minutes later.
Safin, who turns 19 years old on Sunday, stole the puck behind the goal line on the left side of the Cataractes' zone and saw a wide-open Boucher in front of the net. Boucher deked to his backhand and lifted the puck past the goalie's blocker.
The visitors grabbed momentum three minutes into the second period with two goals eleven seconds apart.
First, moments after a Shawinigan power play chance expired, Denis potted the rebound of a shot from the middle of the slot.
On the next shift, a shot from the left point was blocked and bounced in front of the goal where Plamondon batted it past a surprised Tommy Da Silva, who was making his QMJHL debut in the Sea Dogs' goal.
The Sea Dogs restored a two-goal lead with two minutes left in the frame.
While on a power play, Burt took a pass near the bottom of the left circle and whipped a shot along the ice that snuck under Bellemare to make it 4-2.
Imbeault responded with just over a minute left after a pass from the right boards created a scramble in front of Da Silva.
Shawinigan tied the game more than nine minutes into the third when Dubois fired a backhand shot from the right circle that went past Da Silva's blocker.
Horvath gave the Cataractes the lead 42 seconds later with a one-timer from the right point that went off Da Silva's right leg and inside the right post.
Imbeault made it 6-4 with another power play strike with five minutes left in the period.
Gursoy got Saint John back to within one just over a minute later after a turnover behind the Shawinigan net.
Bellemare attempted to play the puck into the corner when Boucher stole it and fed it in front of the open cage. Safin knifed a backhander toward the goal that Gursoy redirected inside the left post.
On the next shift, Plamondon won a race to a loose puck on the right wing side, stepped into the circle and rifled a wrister over Da Silva's blocker to make it 7-5.
Theoret finished the scoring with an empty-netter with 55.2 seconds to go.
Bellemare earned the win with 20 saves. Da Silva made 32 saves in the loss.
Imbeault earned first star with two goals and an assist while Safin was named second star with a goal and three assists. Plamondon's two goals made him third star in front of 4,354 fans in attendance.
