Long Island Ducks News Release

(Central Islip, N.Y., Aug. 27, 2002) – The Long Island Ducks continued to struggle on offense as Dave Carroll tossed a complete game for the Surf in a 6-1 Atlantic City win on Tuesday night. It was the second consecutive night in which a Surf pitcher went the distance following Ismael Villegas' complete game on Monday.

After scoring four runs in the first inning yesterday, the Ducks went the next 15 innings without crossing the plate. They finally broke through against Carroll with a run in the eighth inning on a Doug Jennings sacrifice fly. By the time Justin Davies scored, Atlantic City had already built up a six-run lead, which Carroll made stand up. Davies, the lone bright spot for the Ducks offense, was 2-4, extending his hitting streak to 12 games.

The Surf got to Ducks starter Richie Lewis early and often, scoring two in the first, one in the second and two more in the third. Rick Johnson had four hits in five tries and Jose Velasquez continued to feast on Ducks pitching, going 2-4 with two RBI. Steve Hine chipped in with two hits and two runs scored.

Carroll held the Ducks to just six hits and two walks while striking out four to raise his record to 3-4. Lewis lost his second consecutive decision, dropping to 3-2, allowing five runs (four earned) on 10 hits and three walks.

The Camden Riversharks return to Citibank Park on Wednesday to begin a four-game series, including a double header on Thursday. Long Island's Ron Frazier (5-2) gets the ball on Wednesday for the Ducks, facing Camden's Del Mathews (8-7). The game begins at 7:05 p.m. and the first 2,000 fans will receive a Notebook courtesy of Staples.
