Memphis, Tenn. - The World Champion St. Louis Cardinals needed late inning heroics to down their Triple-A club 6-2 Friday night in front of 15,116 at AutoZone Park.
Backup catcher Gary Bennett made his one at-bat count with an eighth inning grand slam that made the difference. Chris Duncan led off the inning with a double before Albert Pujols and So Taguchi each drew walks from Redbirds right-hander Andy Cavazos.
The Redbirds struck first with an RBI-single from Nick Stavinoha in the bottom of the second inning and again in the fifth with Brian Esposito's RBI-groundout. Stavinoha led the âBirds with a pair of hits, while David Eckstein and Duncan each had two hits for the Cardinals.
Memphis pitching kept the Cards bats in check through the first six innings with right-hander Blake Hawksworth tossing five scoreless frames. Troy Cate allowed two runs, one earned, on three hits in one inning of work. Mike Sillman was the lone Memphis pitcher to record a strikeout fanning Preston Wilson in the seventh inning. Cavazos took the loss after giving up four runs on two hits in one inning.
Former Redbird Anthony Reyes allowed two runs in 5.1 innings. He struck out five but did not factor in the decision. Josh Hancock earned the win with 1.1 innings of perfect work.
St. Louis will take on the Cleveland Indians tomorrow in Major League Baseball's first-ever Civil Rights Game. Right-hander Adam Wainwright will start for the Cardinals against Indians left-hander Jeremy Sowers. The game will be broadcast on ESPN beginning at 4:30 p.m.
