Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
FORT MYERS, FL - The Palm Beach Cardinals capitalized in the late innings with four runs in the seventh and eighth to break a 5-5 deadlock and down the Fort Myers Miracle, 9-5, at Hammond Stadium on Saturday evening in front of 2,955 fans.
Palm Beach scratched across the go-ahead run in the seventh inning off of Miracle reliever Matt Hauser. After Niko Vasquez and Alan Ahmady earned back-to-back walks, Adam Melker forced the bases loaded on a hard chopper to first that Steve Liddle did not handle cleanly.
Cardinal second baseman Starlin Rodriguez sent a fly ball to right field that allowed Vasquez to score on a sacrifice, breaking a 5-5 tie.
Adding three runs in the eighth inning off of reliever Bruce Pugh, the Cardinals opened up a 9-5 lead en route to an eventual win.
The Miracle and Palm Beach traded blows in the early innings. The Cardinals jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a Kyle Conley sac-fly in the first. Fort Myers answered with a two-run triple off the bat of Oswaldo Arcia. The native of Anaco, Venezuela came all the way around to score after a throwing error on the relay by shortstop Domnit Bolivar.
Palm Beach drew even, 3-3, in the second when Greg Garcia delivered a two-run double with two outs. The Cardinals would regain the lead, 5-3, in the fifth with back-to-back RBI plate appearances from Vasquez and Ahmady.
Miracle catcher Josmil Pinto exhibited his penchant for hitting with runners in scoring position and two men out in the bottom of the fifth. With Angel Morales and Aaron Hicks on board, Pinto sliced an 0-2 pitch from Cardinal reliever Chris Corrigan into right field to plate a pair.
Pinto finished the game 3-for-4 and is now hitting .407 with 13 runs batted in in situations with runners in scoring position and two down. The Venezuelan international has driven in 19 runs in his last 21 games.
Starter Pat Dean received a no decision after giving up five runs, four earned, on nine hits in five innings. Kevin Siegrist began the game for the Cardinals and ceded two earned runs on four hits in three innings.
Daniel Calhoun (3-3) pitched 1.1 innings for the victory and Matt Hauser (2-3) was tagged with the loss after giving up an unearned run in 1.1 innings.
The Miracle (53-65, 19-29) will play the final regular season meeting with the Palm Beach Cardinals (57-62, 28-22) at Hammond Stadium on Sunday. First pitch is slated for 1:05 p.m. Tune into every inning on www.miraclebaseball.com with the 'Voice of the Miracle' Alex Margulies, Brice Zimmerman, and a special guest appearance of official scorer Scott Pederson.
