Springfield Cardinals News Release

The Springfield Cardinals held on for their third straight win on Saturday night, edging the first-place Northwest Arkansas Naturals by a score of 2-1 at Arvest Ballpark.

Springfield starter Scott Gorgen turned in his best Double-A performance, while the bullpen followed with four scoreless innings of relief.

Gorgen (2-3) allowed just one runs on four hits, throwing 91 pitches over five innings of work. After a third-inning RBI double by Colt Sedbrook plated Pete Kozma for a 1-0 Springfield lead, the Naturals got their one and only run in the bottom of the third inning against Gorgen. With Jarrod Dyson at third base and two outs, Corey Smith delivered an RBI single to center field, tying the game at 1-1.

The Redbird offense responded and got Gorgen the lead back in the next half-inning, as Pete Kozma's RBI groundout plated Andrew Brown, with what turned out to be the winning run, as the Cards took a 2-1 lead over Naturals' starter Anthony Lerew (6-6).

Gorgen pitched around a one-out double in the fourth and then around a one-out single in the fifth.

Marco Gonzalez followed with two frames of scoreless work, then turned it over to Francisco Samuel in the eighth. Samuel allowed a one-out hit, followed by a single, allowing a pair of Naturals to reach. With runners at second and third and only one out, Samuel came back to strike out Vance Wilson and then Ed Lucas, with Naturals' Manager Brian Poldberg being ejected for arguing a check-swing by Lucas to end the inning.

Eduardo Sanchez earned his second save in as many games, pitching a scoreless ninth. Sanchez gave up a one-out single to Jose Duarte, but picked him off first base shortly thereafter. Dyson went down looking to end the game, giving Sanchez his fourth save since being called up from Palm Beach.

Springfield (16-18, 54-50) looks for their fourth straight win on Sunday afternoon, taking on the Naturals at 2:30pm. Lance Lynn (9-4) goes up against Naturals' right-hander Blake Johnson (6-7) in the third game of the four-game set.

After the seven-game road trip finishes up, the Cards return to Hammons Field to open a seven-game home stand against Arkansas and Tulsa, beginning on Tuesday, August 4th. Don't miss out on Bruce Sutter Bobblehead Giveaway on Saturday, August 8th, thanks to Hardee's. Tickets are available by calling (417) 863-2143 or online at springfieldcardinals.com.
