Madison Capitols News Release

The Madison Capitols take a 1-0 series lead in the Clark Cup Finals after defeating the Sioux City Musketeers 3-2.

Madison secured the victory with their elite penalty kill this evening. Shorthanded for two minutes with 2:07 left in regulation holding on to a one-goal lead, the Caps shutdown Sioux City to finish the evening a perfect 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.

"I thought we came out and had a really good first. It's good to come out and get that type of start on the road," Capitols head coach Tommy Upton said. "Our power play and penalty kill both came up huge there in the 2nd period. In the 3rd, Sioux City had a really nice push, as we expected but I thought the boys did a really good job of limiting grade A chances in the 3rd even though they had a lot of zone time."

Madison got the scoring going when DJ Hart made a heads up play and iced a puck all the way down the ice knowing winger Quinn Finley would negate an icing call. Finley scooped the puck off the back wall, skated out front and buried a backhand goal with 11:30 to go in the 1st period. With 48 seconds left in the opening frame, Tyler Haskins extended the Capitols lead to 2-0 when he tipped a shot out front that perfectly rainbowed over the shoulder of Musketeers netminder, Alex Tracy.

Madison's third goal and eventual game winning goal came on the power play with 12:17 to play in the 2nd period. Blueliner Luke Mittelstadt ripped his signature left side shot to put the Capitols back up two goals. The Caps shut down the Musketeers the remainder of the game to secure the 1-0 series lead.

Madison and Sioux City will drop the puck for Game 2 tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m.
