Madison Capitols News Release

Plymouth, MI - A 3rd period comeback by USA was thrown away as the Madison Capitols edged out the US National Team Development Program in a 5-4 shootout at USA Hockey Arena on Sunday afternoon. With the win, Madison has reached double digit wins for the season.

The 17's took an initial lead at Hunter McKown knifed a Luke Hughes shot out of the air for his first goal of the 2019-20 hockey campaign with only 2:45 remaining in the opening period.

The lead didn't last long when Gustav Muller found the back of the net on a wristshot to tie the game 24 seconds later with his 6th goal of the season. Ryan Kirwan gave the Capitols a lead before the period ended with a shorthanded breakaway goal. Kirwan's goal was his 22nd of the season, giving him control of 3rd place for most goals in a single season.

2:30 into the 2nd period, Carson Bantle fired a quick shot past Kaidan Mbereko for his 19th of the season following a faceoff win from Kirwan.

Kirwan snuck home his 2nd goal of the afternoon early in the 3rd period, but USA stormed back with three answered goals to force overtime.

Following a scoreless five minutes, the two teams faced off in a shootout. Dylan Duke beat Christian Stoever (36 saves) in the first round, but Bantle tied it up in the 2nd before Muller gave the Capitols a lead.

Some controversy on Sasha Pastujov's attempt gave him a second opportunity, but Stoever once again came up big for the Capitols, sending them home with a victory.

The Capitols return to action on Friday, March 6th, when the U18 Team USA comes to Madison for the second to last $1 beer night of the season. Puck drop is set for 7:05pm at Bob Suter's Capitol Ice Arena.

If you can't make it out to the game, make sure to tune into Mixlr and HockeyTV to get the live call from broadcaster, Cody Lefkowitz.
