Canada, Sweden advance to Gold Medal game

The Final Round of the International Ice Hockey Federation's 2004 World Championships continued with the two Semifinals games on Saturday in Prague, Czech Republic. The World Championships, which began on April 24, concludes with the Gold and Bronze Medal games on Sunday. For the second consecutive year, Canada and Sweden will battle for the Gold Medal, with the Swedes looking to defend their title. Team U.S.A. will battle Slovakia for the Bronze Medal. The U.S. won the Bronze in 1996, and lost to Sweden in the Bronze Medal game in 2001.

Sweden defeated the U.S. in a hard-fought 3-2 victory on Saturday. The Swedes had NHL superstars Peter Forsberg (Colorado Avalanche) and Nicklas Lidstrom (Detroit Red Wings) making their World Championship debuts after their NHL teams' elimination from the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Boston Bruins forward P.J. Axelsson tallied a goal and an assist, while Bruin teammate Michael Nylander had an assist. The U.S. goals were scored by Richard Park and Jeff Halpern, while goaltender Mike Dunham made 25 saves. Team U.S.A. is coached by former Providence Bruins defenseman and head coach Peter Laviolette. Former P-Bruins defensemen Hal Gill and Jeff Jillson played in the game, while left wing Andy Hilbert did not dress.

Canada defeated Slovakia on Saturday in another tight game, 2-1. Shawn Horcoff scored the game-winning goal in the third period, with an assist from former Providence Bruins defenseman Steve Staios. Daniel Briere scored the other goal, while goaltender Roberto Luongo made 28 saves. Original P-Bruin Glen Murray played for Canada, while Boston Bruins teammate Patrice Bergeron also played. Murray's teammate on the 1992-93 inaugural P-Bruins team, Jozef Stumpel, played for Slovakia.
