Halifax Mooseheads News Release

Former Halifax Mooseheads' Assistant Coach Cam Russell was named today as the team's new Head Coach.

The appointment was announced by Mooseheads' General Manager Marcel Patenaude during a packed press conference at the Citadel Inn in Halifax today.

The 37-year-old Russell served three years as assistant coach with the Mooseheads from 2000 to 2003 and, for the last two seasons, has acted as Player Development Consultant with the team, working closely with the Mooseheads' young players and the rest of the coaching staff.

Prior to joining the Mooseheads in 2000, Russell played 10 years of professional hockey, including 396 NHL games with the Chicago Blackhawks and Colorado Avalanche.

Russell, Chicago's third selection (50) in the 1987 NHL Entry Draft, from the Hull Olympiques, where he played four seasons in the QMJHL, played his first NHL game with the Blackhawks during the 1989-90 season and went on to play 354 games with Chicago before being traded to Colorado Nov. 10, 1998. Russell played 42 games with Colorado before suffering a torn rotator cuff injury in a game against Philadelphia Feb. 14, 1999, forcing him to miss the rest of the season and the whole of the next, bringing an end to his NHL career.

Russell, regarded as a tough, stay at home defenceman during his NHL career, tallied 9 goals and 21 assists, while amassing 872 penalty minutes. He recorded 5 assists in 44 NHL playoff games.

"Having Cam Russell move into the Head Coaching job ensures continuity and is a good move for our club," Mooseheads' General Manager Marcel Patenaude said. "Cam's association with the team and our players over the past should make the transition into the Head Coaching position that much easier.

"We have always been extremely pleased with the way Cam worked with our players and with the rest of the coaching staff. The rapid development of our young players speaks well for his abilities to lead our team."
