Calfapietra Named Manager of the Year

Gary, IN â Gary SouthShore RailCats manager, Joe Calfapietra has been named Daktronics Northern League Central Manager of the Year. Calfapietra was selected as this year's honoree with votes from the manager and one media representative from each Central Division city.
"This is a well deserved honor, Joe has done a great job of keeping the club motivated this year under our unique circumstances," said Vice President/General Manager Roger Wexelberg.
Calfapietra has earned this award for his leadership of the RailCats during their inaugural 2002 season. He is the first manager in RailCats history, therefore the first to earn this award for the organization.
During the 2000 season, Calfapietra also made history by becoming the Northern League's youngest manager at age 29. He managed the Allentown Ambassadors that season as well as the 2001 season before being hired by the RailCats organization.
"I would like to thank the RailCats organization for being so supportive of me and the ballclub this season. I also have to thank my players tremendously - they were the ones that went out and played while facing adverse situations without losing faith or giving up. I wouldn't have even been considered for this award without them," said Calfapietra.
The RailCats are now 15-23 in the second half with seven games left in the season. The team will play their first home game in their new multi-million dollar stadium located in the City of Gary during the 2003 Northern League season.
