By the Numbers: We Meet Again

September 1, 2020 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Orlando City SC News Release

38.8% - Winning in multiple ways

Orlando City have been one of the most ball-dominant teams in MLS since the league returned to play in July. The Lions held the majority of possession in seven of their first nine games after their return and had at least 60% of the ball in each of their three previous matches going into Saturday's 3-1 win at Atlanta United. But facing a team that wanted the ball in Georgia, Oscar Pareja adapted his side to play without it, and Orlando were able to secure a victory despite only having 38.8% possession on the day.

1.93 - Daryl's extraordinary start

Daryl Dike has taken MLS by storm since entering the starting XI on August 22 in Fort Lauderdale. The 5th overall pick in the 2020 MLS SuperDraft has 3 G/2 A in 242 minutes over his first three starts, including a brace in last Wednesday's win over Nashville SC. According to American Soccer Analysis, Dike has, by himself, produced 1.93 expected goals across those three games, putting him on the same pace as Atlanta ace Josef Martinez from last season.

9 - Mueller makin' moves

Chris Mueller has broken out in 2020 to become one of the top wingers in MLS, and the numbers back up his rise. Mueller has 6 G/3 A on the season, putting him second to LAFC's Diego Rossi in the MLS Golden Boot race. He's been a complete player, too-Mueller's nine goal contributions are tied with Toronto's Alejandro Pozuelo (2 G/7 A) for the league lead, and Mueller has played 132 fewer minutes than Pozuelo. The third-year player has an assist in each of the last three games, with goals in each of the last two.

22.3 - Youth movement

With two kickoffs last week separated by just 68 hours, Oscar Pareja opted to rest some key players on Saturday in Atlanta, including 33 year-old captain Nani and 30 year-old attacking midfielder Mauricio Pereyra. In stepped Homegrown winger Benji Michel, 22, and Tampa-born Colombian midfielder Andres Perea, all of 19 years old. Michel, Perea, Dike, and Mueller have an average age between the four of them of 22.3 years, and yet they overwhelmed Atlanta with an opportunistic press and terrific combination play.
