By the Numbers: Nashville SC Opens 2021 Season on the Right FootÂÂÂ
June 11, 2021 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Nashville SC News Release
The 2021 Major League Soccer season is in full swing, and Nashville SC is off to a strong start. ÂÂ
With an unbeaten record, the Boys in Gold sit in playoff position in seventh place in the Eastern Conference and are tied on points with fourth-place NYCFC. ÂÂ
While the team waits to get back to action after the international break [LINK TO INTERNATIONAL BREAK ROUNDUP] on June 18 at New York Red Bulls, take a look at some of the numbers that are fueling Nashville SC's successful opening run of the 2021 season.
0 losses
Nashville SC is one of two teams in the Major League Soccer without a loss in 2021 with a 2W-0L-5D record. The other is the back-to-back Western Conference champion and 2019 MLS Cup champion Seattle Sounders FC. ÂÂ
Nashville's unbeaten run to start the season has required grit and tenacity. The Boys in Gold have come back from multi-goal deficits to earn a result three times, including most recently at Atlanta United FC on May 29. Hany Mukhtar scored twice in the final 10 minutes of the match to grab a 2-2 draw from the jaws of defeat on the road.ÂÂ
45 shots on target (Second-most in MLS)
Nashville SC's offense has been hounding opposing defenses so far this season, putting the second-most shots on target in the league. The only club with more shots on target is San Jose Earthquakes. Winger Randall Leal has led the way for Nashville, taking a league-best 15 shots on goal. ÂÂ
This extra potency from the Nashville offense has paid dividends. Its nine goals through seven matches this season put the club well ahead of its pace from 2020, in which it scored four goals in that same span.ÂÂ
4 clean sheets (Third best in MLS)ÂÂ
Nashville SC's stout back line has rounded back into form in 2021, posting four clean sheets in the first seven matches of the season, good for third-best in MLS. Its 414-minute shutout streak that lasted from April 24 to May 29 set a club record.ÂÂ
In addition to goalkeeper Joe Willis' strong performances, Nashville SC's defenders have done a stellar job at keeping opposing offenses out of high-danger areas. The Boys in Gold have allowed a league-low 18 shots on target.
