Buyalsky Nets Overtime Winner, Saints Down Steel 2-1
For the second game in a row, Dubuque used overtime heroics to notch two points. Andrei Buyalsky scored 1:23 into the overtime frame to secure a thrilling 2-1 win for the Fighting Saints. The goal was his first USHL tally and gave Dubuque three straight victories. The Saints didn't trail all weekend in their two overtime wins. Hobie Hedquist recorded his third straight win between the pipes.
-Aidan McCarthy started in net for the Saints, but only because Hobie Hedquist had an equipment malfunction to start the game. McCarthy did not have to make a save, and Hedquist finished out the first period with five saves.
-Primo Self got Dubuque on the board with his first goal of the season. He picked up a pass from Riley Stuart in the attacking zone and ripped it past Ian Shane top corner. Tommy Middleton also recorded an assist on the play.
-The first goal for Dubuque gave them the first goal in three straight games. The Saints have struggled to find leads this season so that bodes well for Dubuque moving forward.
-Dubuque continued to keep the Steel at bay in the second period. Chicago managed 11 shots in the period but Hedquist was once again up to the task, stopping every puck thrown at him in the period.
-Dubuque was very good in front of Hedquist as well, blocking six shots in the period. The Saints defensive game had been a struggled for most of their first 15 games, but over the last few they have figured out a few things and been much better.
-Coming into the game, Chicago had just three periods all season long in which they had not scored, Dubuque nearly doubled that during the first two periods while holding the Steel scoreless.
-Chicago was able to break through late in the third period as Matt Coronato scored his league-leading 14th goal of the season.
-Once again, and overtime winner from Dubuque was the difference as Buyalsky provided the fireworks. His first USHL goal gave the Saints three straight wins for the first time this season.
-Michael Feenstra skated in his 100th game with the Fighting Saints on Sunday afternoon.
-The Saints will be on the road again next weekend as they travel to Youngstown, Ohio to take on the Phantoms. It will be the second time this season Dubuque has seen Youngstown.
