Bulls Drop 3-2 Decision to Odessa

AMARILLO, TX - One goal games have certainly been a tough area for the Amarillo Bulls to solve this season. For the third time in their last five games, the Bulls found themselves on the short end of a close shave - this time a 3-2 setback to the Odessa Jackalopes at the Budweiser Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center. It was the second straight game between the two teams that the score was the final factor and the second time Odessa has come out on top.

Sixteen of the Bulls first 30 games this season has been decided by one goal with the Amarillo have a decided mark of 4-4-4-4. The Jackalopes captured their eight one goal win of the season and moved into sole possession of second place in the South Division. The Bulls failed to gain ground on the fourth and final playoff spot and still trail the Corpus Christi IceRays by five points.

Defenseman Brendan Michaelian gave the Bulls a 1-0 lead late in the third period when his power play blast from the point went off of the goaltender's stick and glove into the net. Jon Russell and Marcus Chorney provided assists on the play at the 14:16 mark. Just over a minute later, Odessa pulled even as Matt Brown's screen shot beat goaltender Jason Grande. The Bulls outshot Odessa 13-7 in the first period.

It was all Amarillo in the middle stanza firing 16 shots on goal, but only able to count for one goal. Gleb Murtazin scored on a wrist shot from the face-off circle with help from Nick Anderson and Simon Morberg.

The third period was a fast and furious one and it was the visitors that quickly asserted themselves and tied the game. Evan Somoza scored off a scramble in front of the net. In the final three minutes of regulation, Petr Miko fired a hard shot to the top corner to give the Jackalopes their first lead.

In the final minute it was all hands on deck for the Bulls as they stormed the front of the net looking for the equalizer. One of the best chances was by Steven Ipri who was able to skate through but his shot sailed over the top of the net.

The Amarillo Bulls outshot the Odessa Jackalopes 39-25. The Bulls penalty killing was a strong point in the game killing off both power play attempts.

The same two South Division teams hit the ice one final time to close out 2017 at the Budweiser Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center tomorrow night at 7 pm. The 8th annual New Year's Eve game sponsored by Budweiser. The first 500 fans get party favors and there is also $1 hotdogs. There is special ticket pricing of $8 for end zones and $10 red sections.
