BULLS BATTLE HARD BUT FALL 3-1 TO MUDBUGS TO CLOSE WEEKEND SERIES
SHREVEPORT, LA - The Amarillo Bulls threw everything had the Shreveport Mudbugs on Saturday night at George's Pond, Hirsch Coliseum, but in the end they came up a bit short. Two second period goals proved to be difference as the Bulls dropped a tough 3-1 decision to the Mudbugs.
With the loss, the Bulls fell nine points back of the Corpus Christi IceRays for the fourth and final playoff spot in the South Division. The IceRays edged the Odessa Jackalopes 2-1 in overtime.
The game was very similar to Friday's as there was no scoring in the first 20 minutes of play. There was plenty of good play, but just nine combined first period shots between the two teams.
Special teams led to the Bulls difficulty in the second period as the Mudbugs forced a turnover at the blue line on a penalty kill. After the Bulls couldn't clear the puck, defenseman Brendan Gyspers wired a puck past Grande to give Shreveport a 1-0 lead.
Just over nine minutes later, the Mudbugs raced up the ice on a 3-on-1, odd-man rush and Gueorgui Fedulov converted the play at the side of goaltender Jason Grande to make it 2-0.
In the dying seconds of the period forward Austin O'Rourke fired a long pass to the waiting stick of Jared Domin who was able to score on a breakaway to cut deficit to 2-1 after 40 minutes of play.
It was a wild third period of play with the Bulls pressing right from the opening face-off trying to tie the game. However, all of the strong plays were turned aside by goaltender Jaxon Castor. Ryan Burnett tallied into an empty net in the final five seconds of regulation to round out the scoring. The Amarillo Bulls were outshot by the Shreveport Mudbugs 20-14. Each team had three power play chances but couldn't score.
The Amarillo Bulls won't be back at the Budweiser Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center on Friday, Feb. 9 and Saturday Feb. 10 at 7 pm.
