Bugs Thump Wolves and Win Series

January 17, 2021 - North American Hockey League (NAHL) - Shreveport Mudbugs News Release


The Shreveport Mudbugs (15-3-2) scored early and often and glided past the New Mexico Ice Wolves, 5-2 for another series win Saturday night at George's Pond in Hirsch Coliseum.

The Bugs struck first in the first period just 3:27 in when Braiden Dorfman grabbed the puck in the slot and tucked in his eighth goal of the season from the short side to give Shreveport the early 1-0 lead. Trenten Heyde earned the only assist. The Bugs added to their lead as their PK unit produced yet again killing off a penalty and it was Matt Weber skating from the far side and backhanding home his eighth tally from the LW circle to make it a 2-0 contest. New Mexico got on the board when Alex Gomez scored his second goal in the slot in front to make it a 2-1 game. Shreveport would grab a two-goal lead again late in the opening period on the PP when Billy Feczko fired home his sixth tally of the season from the RW circle to give Shreveport a 3-1 edge. Dorfman and Aidan Metcalfe picked up the assists. The Bugs led in SOG, 17-7 after one period of play.

Shreveport added to their lead just 40 seconds into the 2nd period when Feczko wired home his second tally of the night from the LW circle along the short side to make it a 4-1 Bugs advantage. Metcalfe earned the only assist on the tally. New Mexico came back when Nikolai Dulak raced up the far side and squeezed in his fifth goal of the season at 8:52 unassisted to make it a 4-2 contest. Shreveport dominated in SOG, 31-17 after two.

Garrett Steele put icing on the cake at 2:14 of the third period when he had open space and blasted in his fifth tally of the season through the slot to make it a 5-2 contest. David Breazeale and Connor Gatto earned the helpers as they set up the last goal of the game.

Luca Di Pasquo made his first start in net as a Mudbug and earned his first win of the season making 22 saves on the night.

Shreveport has now won six of their past seven games.

The Mudbugs will conclude their home-stand this Monday for an MLK day afternoon special against the Wichita Falls Warriors. Puck drop is scheduled for 3:11 p.m.
