Johnson City Doughboys News Release

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - The Pirates slammed three home runs and limited the Cardinals to just two hits, as Bristol knocked off Johnson City, 5-0, on Wednesday night in front of 1,536 fans at TVA Credit Union Ballpark.

With the loss, Johnson City falls to 8-12 on the season. Bristol improves to 6-14 with the victory.

The Pirates jumped out to an early lead, scoring a run in the game's opening frame. 3B Ben Bengtson (1-5, R, SO) reached on an error and DH Huascar Fuentes (1-3, 2 BB) drew a walk. LF Matt Diorio (2-4, 2B, RBI, BB) slapped a single to center - bringing the run home from second - to put Bristol in front, 1-0.

It was from that point on that Bristol utilized the long ball to their advantage. C Jason Delay (1-5, R, HR, RBI, SO) crushed the first pitch of the third inning for a home run to left field. The blast - the first of his pro career - put the Bucs ahead, 2-0.

Following a single by CF Ryan Peurifoy (3-5, 2 R, 2B, HR, RBI), 1B Johan De Jesus (2-4, R, HR, 2 RBI, SO) slapped a fly ball into left-center. The ball just barely cleared the 25-foot fence for a two-run homer - his first of the season - to push the Pirates lead to 4-0.

Peurifoy finished off the scoring attack in the eighth, slashing a solo shot over the right-field wall - the first home run o his pro career - to make it a 5-0 affair.

That was plenty of offense for the Pirates' pitching staff, which limited Johnson City to just two singles. Bristol, Tenn. native and Bristol RHP Hunter Stratton (4.2 IP, H, 3 BB, 5 SO) did not receive a decision but tossed 4.2 scoreless innings in the win. RHP Alex Manasa (2.1 IP, H, SO) allowed just one hit and earned the first victory of his career.

RHP Edwar Ramirez (6.0 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 4 SO) suffered his third straight defeat in a quality start for the Cardinals. The 19-year-old allowed just three earned runs in six innings for Johnson City.

The Cardinals are expected to send RHP Alvaro Seijas (1-0, 4.40 ERA) - St. Louis' No. 20 prospect according to MLBPipeline.com - to the mound in game two of the three-game set. Bristol is slated to give the ball to LHP Domingo Robles (0-3, 3.57 ERA) in Thursday's contest.

The Cardinals Pre-Game Show will kick off the broadcast at 6:45 p.m. ET, leading up to the 7:00 p.m. ET start at TVA Credit Union Ballpark. Thursday evening's contest can be heard on NBCSportsTriCities.com, JCCardinals.com or via the TuneIn Radio and MiLB First Pitch apps.

Thursday night's game will be a Coors Light Thirsty Thursday, featuring one, two, and three dollar draft beer specials. In addition, it will also be Meme Night presented by Quantum Leap. Fans will be given posters to create their own meme's and the best one's will receive a prize.
