Buccaneers Score Four in Third Period to Defeat Cedar Rapids

February 9, 2017 - United States Hockey League (USHL) - Des Moines Buccaneers News Release

The Des Moines Buccaneers couldn't manage a goal until the third period but good goaltending and timely scoring allowed them to hold on until then and skate away to a 4-1 victory Wednesday night on the road over Cedar Rapids.

Neither team could find the back of the net in the opening period as Cedar Rapids went 0-for-2 on the power play and Des Moines was unsuccessful in one man advantage. The RoughRiders started out the period with an edge in shots on goal but Des Moines would end up winning that statistic 12-9 after twenty minutes were completed.

Early in the second period Cedar Rapids would strike when a shot on Buccaneer goalie Jan Ruzicka left a rebound to the right of the netminder and he couldn't locate the loose puck that was jammed home by Bobby Hampton. The RoughRiders outshot the Buccaneers 11-6 in the middle frame.

Des Moines would find their offense in the third as Reed Lebster picked up an unassisted goal 3:58 into the period as he came straight out of the penalty box, stole a puck from a RoughRider and beat goaltender Drew DeRidder to the far post and slipped it between DeRidder's skate and the post. Des Moines would then strike twice on the power play as Matt Jones would backhand a loose puck in the slot at the 9:57 mark and then Mario Ferraro would find a lot of open space on the left side of the ice and roofed a snipe shot over DeRidder 12:26 into the third. Reed Lebster would score his second unassisted goal of the night, this time shorthanded, as the RoughRiders had pulled their goalie and Lebster banked a shot from his own blue line off a Cedar Rapids skater and in with 1:04 to play.

Ruzicka would make 30 saves to improve Des Moines' record to 23-13-1-3 while DeRidder stopped 24 in defeat as Cedar Rapids fell to 7-31-1-1. Up next for the Buccaneers are a pair on the road against the Muskegon Lumberjacks Friday and Saturday. The next time the Bucs will be at home is Saturday, February 18th vs. the Dubuque Fighting Saints for Buc Night meaning $1 hot dogs, popcorn and soft drinks. For tickets to the game call 278-2827
