Boston Breakers News Release
With just seven games remaining for half the teams in the National Women's Soccer League, and six left for the other half, the playoff push is on, and heading into this weekend, every team is still mathematically in the race. This includes the Boston Breakers, who currently hold the best record amongst the four teams fighting for the fourth and final playoff spot.
Sunday, the Breakers look to pick up a crucial three points, and extend their unbeaten streak to a season-high five games, when they host Portland Thorns FC (4 p.m. ET) at Dilboy Stadium in Somerville. These two teams met back on July 6 in Portland with the Breakers taking a 2-0 victory, getting a pair of goals from Sydney Leroux, which garnered the U.S. Women's National Team forward NWSL Player of the Week honors. Midfielder Heather O'Reilly assisted on both goals, and keeper Alyssa Naeher earned her first NWSL shutout in the win.
For Portland, the second-place club brings in a lot of star power to Sunday's match, including U.S. Women's National Team forward Alex Morgan, Canadian Women's National Team captain Christine Sinclair, newly added midfielder and U.S. Women's National Team player Tobin Heath, and one of the top keepers in the league, Canadian national teamer and former Boston Breaker Karina LeBlanc.
