Brantly Bashes Two Homers in 5-2 Win Friday

August 13, 2017 - International League (IL) - Charlotte Knights News Release

(ALLENTOWN, PA) - Rob Brantly mashed two home runs, Cody Asche added another, and the Charlotte Knights slugged their way past the Lehigh Valley IronPigs by a score of 5-2 on Friday in game two of their four-game series from Coca-Cola Park in Allentown, PA. The win was Charlotte's second in as many days.

Appearing in his 28th game of the season with the Knights since re-joining the club from the Cincinnati Reds organization on June 29th, Brantly had a stellar night at the plate on Friday. The 28-year-old backstop launched a solo-run home run in the fourth inning and a two-run home run in the seventh inning. He finished the night 3-for-4 with two runs scored, two home runs, and three RBIs.

Former Lehigh Valley infielder/outfielder Cody Asche also homered in Friday's game. Asche ripped his 11th home run of the season - a two-run shot - in the fifth inning for the Knights off IronPigs starting pitcher Jose Taveras (1-1, 1.59), who was saddled with the loss.

RHP Steve Johnson, who was acquired by the Chicago White Sox in a trade with the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday, was officially added to Charlotte's roster on Friday and got the start for the Knights. Johnson, who started in place of RHP Reynaldo Lopez, allowed just one hit over three shutout innings. The Baltimore, MD native struck-out four batters. He took the roster spot of Lopez, who was recalled to Chicago earlier in the day.

In the fourth inning, the Knights handed the ball to RHP Jean Machi (2-0, 6.00), who allowed two runs on five hits over four innings of work. Machi struck-out a team-high five batters on the night and earned the win. RHP Brandon Brennan gave up just one hit over the final two innings to earn his second save of the season.

The Knights will continue their four-game series against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs from Coca-Cola Park on Saturday night. Pre-game radio coverage of Saturday's 6:35 p.m. game will begin at 6:20 p.m. on ESPN Charlotte (730 AM) and The "Voice of the Charlotte Knights" Matt Swierad will have the call for all of the action.
