The WHEAT KINGS begin their annual west coast excursion Wednesday night in PRINCE GEORGE with a game against the COUGARS.BRANDON is currently sitting in second place in the Western Hockey League's Eastern Division with a record of 6-3-0-1, good for thirteen points - two better than the third place REGINA PATS.The WHEATS are coming off Sunday's come from behind 4-3 victory over the visiting KOOTENAY ICE at the Keystone.COREY COURCHENE'S first goal of the season with just over four minutes remaining in the third period lifted BRANDON to the win.With the win, BRANDON completed it's most recent home stand with a 2-2-0 record.ERIC FEHR with two and RYAN STONE also scored for the WHEATIES, who opened this past weekend by losing a heartbreaking 3-1 decision to the defending champion MEDICINE HAT TIGERS.Captain TIM KONSORADA scored the lone goal for the WHEAT KINGS, who saw the TIGERS score two unanswered third period goals.The WHEATS are 4-2-0-1 at home and 2-1-0 on the road and 1-0-0 vs. Western Conference clubs.BRANDON currently has 26 players on it's active roster.
WHEATIES WECOME BACK MONYCH: The PHOENIX COYOTES have reassigned 20-year old forward LANCE MONYCH to the WHEAT KINGS, giving BRANDON four overage players - one over the limit - and have until November 5th on which to make a decision on the final three.A fourth round draft choice of the COYOTES, MONYCH began the season with the IDAHO STEELHEADS and is coming off a career year that saw him score 29 goals and 55 points in 58 games to finish fifth in club scoring.The Winnipeg native joins TIM KONSORADA, ANDRE BLANCHETTE and STEVEN LATER as BRANDON'S four 20-year olds.Last week the WHEATS moved defenceman TYLER BOLDT to SASKATOON in exchange for a fifth round draft choice and a switch in next year's Canadian Hockey League Import draft.
WHOSE BEEN HOT? RYAN STONE had his 8-game point scoring streak snapped Saturday night against the TIGERS. During the streak, the PITTSBURGH PENGUINS' second round draft choice had seven goals and 16 points and is currently fifth in WHL scoring.STONE has points in nine of 10 games this season.Captain TIM KONSORADA is 4-10-14 in ten games while ERIC FEHR, one of only three WHL players to score fifty goals last season, has ten goals and 16 points.
MILESTONES: Captain TIM KONSORADA played his 250th career WHL game Sunday night vs. KOOTENAY.Finnish rookie SAMI SANDELL picked up his first WHL points - both assists - in Wednesday's win over MOOSE JAW while rookie RYAN REAVES and second year defenceman STEPHANE LENOSKI both scored their first ever WHL goals in the same game.ERIC FEHR is three goals shy of the century mark in his 4-year WHL career.
VS. PRINCE GEORGE: In the only game played between these two clubs last season, the WHEAT KINGS skated to a 7-5 October victory at the Keystone Centre.MIKE NICHOL stopped 28 of 33 shots and TEEGAN MOORE led the WHEAT KINGS with a goal and an assist.
SPECIAL TEAMS: Entering this week, BRANDON'S powerplay continues to lead the WHL, having connected on 16-57 (27.6%) of it's chances.Penalty killing, the WHEAT KINGS are ranked 19th at 76% (30-39).
BRANDON BITS: In addition to announcing the return of LANCE MONYCH on Friday, the WHEAT KINGS dealt the rights to DAUPHIN KINGS defenceman TYLER HARDER to CALGARY for a sixth round draft pick in next year's bantam draft.Left-winger COREY COURCHENE has been named winner of the 2004 PROVINCIAL ABORIGINAL ATHLETIC JUNIOR AWARD.Saturday night's crowd of 4,185 was the second largest of the season.BRANDON has drawn 25,000 fans through it's first seven home games of the regular season.Following Wednesday's game in PRINCE GEORGE, the WHEAT KINGS will hit the highway for games in VANCOUVER on Friday and KELOWNA on Saturday night.BRANDON'S next home game is Thursday, November 11th against the defending Western Conference Champion EVERETT SILVERTIPS, coached by former NHL bench boss KEVIN CONSTANTINE.
