Blue Jays Stumble Offensively in Loss

August 4, 2017 - Florida State League (FSL) - Dunedin Blue Jays News Release

The Dunedin Blue Jays fall to the Charlotte Stone Crabs in game one of the four game set by the 2-0 final at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium. The Blue Jays hit .396 with runners in scoring position in the series sweep of the Florida Fire Frogs, but left 12 on base and went 0-11 in the aformentioned catagory.

Charlotte finished the ballgame with eight hits in the game. Third Basemen Kevin Padlo went 2-4 in the ballgame driving in both runs with a single in the third and a double in the sixth to push both of their runs across.

That was all the scoring needed for the Stone Crabs pitching staff as the combination of RHP Brandon Lawson, LHP Michael Velasquez, and Reese Karalus blanked the Blue Jays offense. Lawson picked up the victory in his fourth start of the year, tossing five scoreless innings, striking out three.

Southpaw Michael Velasquez was summoned out of the bullpen in the bottom of the sixth and hurled three scoreless frames.

In the bottom of the ninth, D.J. Davis and Jake Thomas both singled to put the tying runs aboard with nobody out. Stone Crabs Manager Michael Johns made the call to the pen to handed the ball to Reese Karalus. Both Bo Bichette and Cavan Biggio struck out, and Vladimir Guerrerro Jr. flied out to right to end the game.

RHP John Straka was the tough luck loser for Dunedin, going six inning and giving up two earned on six hits to pick up the quality start. Meanwhile the combination of Riley Unroe, Ryan Boldt, and Kevin Padlo went 5-11 with two RBI, and a run scored.

With the win, Charlotte extends their winning streak a modest four games and have won seven of their last nine. Dunedin saw their nine game home winning streak snapped, but have still won 11 of their last 15.

Game two of the series will commence tomorrow evening at 6:30 p.m. at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium between Charlotte and Dunedin. RHP Jordan Romano (5-5, 3.20) will take the hill tomorrow for Dunedin. Tickets are still available by logging on to or by calling 727-733-9302.
