Buffalo Bisons News Release

The Toronto Blue Jays today announced that they have claimed INF MAURO GOMEZ off waivers from the Boston Red Sox and optioned him to the Buffalo Bisons.

Gomez, 28, was the International League's Most Valuable Player in 2012 after hitting .310 (120-387) with 34 doubles, 24 home runs and 74 RBI in 100 games with the Pawtucket Red Sox. He led the league in slugging percentage (.589) and finished in the Top 5 in virtually every offensive category including average (2nd, .310), home runs (T3rd, 24), Doubles, (T3rd, 34) and RBI (5th -74).

Gomez also made his Major League debut with Boston last year and hit .275 with two home runs and 17 RBI in 37 games.

Gomez had a virtually identical Triple-A season in 2011 with Gwinnett as he did in 2012. In 135 games with the G-Braves, Gomez hit .304 with 34 doubles and 24 home runs to go along with 90 RBI. His 154 hits that season were second to only Indianapolis' Matt Hague.

To make room on their 40-man roster, the Toronto Blue Jays designed RHP Dave Bush for assignment.
