Baltimore Blast News Release
Baltimore, MD - The Baltimore Blast lost three players to the Detroit Ignition in this afternoon's MISL Expansion Draft. The Expansion Draft took place today in order to fill the roster for the expansion Detroit Ignition who will take the field for the 2006-07 MISL season. The Ignition, coached by Mark Pulisic, selected goalkeeper Sanaldo, forward Joel Bailey and midfielder Carlos Garcia from the 2006 MISL Champion Blast.
"It is always unpleasant when you lose any players from a championship team," Baltimore Blast General Manager Kevin Healey said. "Sanaldo, Joel and Carlos all played an important part in our championship. It's unfortunate that we've lost these players but it's part of the business of sports and we wish them the best of luck."
Sanaldo, Baltimore's championship-winning goalkeeper, joined the Blast prior to the 2005-06 season and was Detroit's first pick in today's draft. Sanaldo went 2-4 in the regular season and 2-1 in the Championship Series against the St. Louis Steamers. He stopped 22 of the 24 shots he faced in Game One of the championship, allowed three goals in Game Two and held the Steamers scoreless in the sudden-death golden-goal game that determined the MISL Championship. Sanaldo played for the Kansas City Comets from 2003-05 and was named to the 2004 MISL All-Rookie Team.
Bailey came to Baltimore late in the 2004-05 season in a trade with the Cleveland Force and recorded 11 goals and nine assists (20 points) in 29 games last season. He started his MISL career in Cleveland in 2003-04 and is currently playing for the A-League Montreal Impact. The Blast selected Garcia in the 2002 MISL Amateur Draft and he spent the last three seasons with the club. Garcia returned to the playing field last season after undergoing surgery in November of 2004 to repair a torn ACL. He recorded 19 points (12 goals and 7 assists) last season, and 14 points (eight goals and six assists) in the last 14 games of the season.
The 16-round Major Indoor Soccer League Expansion Draft was held today via conference call in order for Detroit to fill its roster with players from the other six MISL teams. Baltimore, Philadelphia, St. Louis and Milwaukee lost the maximum three players.
The Baltimore Blast is currently conducting summer soccer camps throughout the summer at various sites in the Baltimore area. The Baltimore Blast Summer Soccer Camps will run until the week of August 14-18.
