Black Hawks Picks Are In
Waterloo, Iowa - Ten young players from across the continent and around the world are now officially Waterloo Black Hawks prospects after being chosen Monday during Phase One of the 2019 United States Hockey League Draft.
New Brunswick native Cole Huckins led the group when the Hawks chose him in the second round. Skating for Stanstead College in Quebec last winter, Huckins helped the Spartans to a 14-4-1 record and second place finish in the Midwest Prep Hockey League. He was an MPHL All-Star, tying for first in scoring with 27 points (five goals, 22 assists).
While four picks were used to acquire players from neighboring states - including Minnesotans Carter Batchelder and Joseph DelGreco in the third round - Waterloo also claimed two other Canadians - Jesse Fishman and Declan Ride - as well as Japanese forward Aito Iguchi.
Waterloo did not have a pick during Monday's Phase One first round, instead exchanging it for the opportunity to sign forward Matthew Argentina to a pre-draft commitment via the USHL's tender process. In March, the Mercer Chiefs' star and Notre Dame recruit was the first player to be tendered by any USHL club in 2019. It was the second consecutive year the Black Hawks have signed a player under the league's tender rules after forward Wyatt Schingoethe was acquired through the same means last spring.
Under the rules for Monday's Phase One, all of the players selected were born in 2003. The Black Hawks' complete draft list Monday included:
Name Rd/Pick Position 2018/19 Team
Cole Huckins 2/28 F Stanstead College Spartans
Carter Batchelder 3/43 F Eden Prairie (MN) High School
Joseph DelGreco 3/44 F Grand Rapids Thunderhawks AA
Copeland Fricker 4/50 F Selects Academy 15s
Jonah Copre 4/59 D Chicago Mission 15s
Oliver Flynn 6/89 F Connecticut Chiefs 16U
Aito Iguchi 7/104 F Saitama Jr. Warriors U15
Jesse Fishman 8/119 F Mississauga Rebels AAA
Trey Zagrzebski 9/134 F SPASHS (WI)
Declan Ride 10/149 D Toronto Nationals AAA
The USHL Draft takes place in two stages. Phase One selections often continue to develop at other levels of hockey while remaining on their USHL team's affiliate list. Phase Two of the USHL Draft begins on Tuesday, May 7th. During these rounds, teams will select players born between 1999 and 2003 in an effort to fill their protected lists with skaters who will immediately compete for roster spots for the 2019/20 season.
