Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Waterloo, Iowa - Young hockey players from many of the nation's top youth hockey programs will come to the Cedar Valley in late July to work with current Waterloo Black Hawks coaches and staff during the team's annual Futures Camps.
Players born in 2008 and 2009 will be in attendance at Young Arena from July 21st to 24th. A session for 2007-born athletes will follow from July 28th to 31st. In between, the Hawks will welcome goaltenders from 2002 through 2009 birth years July 25th through 27th.
Black Hawks Head Coach Matt Smaby and the current Waterloo coaching staff were installed around the time Futures Camps were ending in 2021, making this Smaby's first opportunity to lead the team's Futures Camp program.
"We will do some things differently this year, but we will still have current Black Hawks players deeply involved, as well as the full attention of our scouting staff," said Smaby. "One thing I certainly expect to be the same: we're going to have some really good athletes from all over the country, and it will be a great opportunity for any player aspiring to skate in the USHL who wants to see how he compares to his peers."
As in past years, Futures Camps will be conducted with a game-focused format, similar to a junior team try-out scenario. Each player will appear in seven games during the four-day camp, which will include off-ice training and coaching sessions. Smaby and Black Hawks coaches are planning new presentations for participants. Meal vouchers are also included.
For the Hawks' Goalie Camp, there will be two on-ice sessions each day during the three-day gathering (six total). Coaches will provide report cards for in-season development, as well as one-on-one analysis. Members of the 2021/22 Black Hawks team will be on ice to serve as shooters while coaches provide goalies with instruction.
Registration is currently open, with more information about each camp available from waterlooblackhawks.com/futurescamps.
