Binghamton Senators News Release

LAST WEEK: The Senators (12-24-1-5, 30 pts.) were 1-2 last week, including a 5-4 shootout victory over the Syracuse Crunch on Saturday night.

MONDAY, JANUARY 15th @ SYRACUSE (3-4 SOL):

After fifteen minutes of scoreless hockey, the Senators took advantage of a 5-on-3 power play, as defenseman ANDY HEDLUND went top shelf from the near point over Tomas Popperle's glove to give Binghamton a 1-0 lead. All four HEDLUND markers this season have come with Binghamton on the power play. Olivier Labelle tied the game with just two minutes left in the first stanza. Labelle took a centering feed from Derrick Walser, who was sitting in the deep left circle, and tapped it past JEFF GLASS. After a Crunch goal by Philippe Dupuis in the second period, JOSH HENNESSY buried the Senators' second power-play marker of the afternoon to knot the game a 2 apiece. HEDLUND collected his second point with a helper on the play. With five minutes remaining in regulation, winger CORY PECKER snatched a loose puck from the Senators zone and had a solo rush. PECKER went top shelf over Popperle's glove, just as HEDLUND had in the first stanza. The B-Sens couldn't hold the third period lead, as Derrick Walser buried a short-handed marker at 18:17 to send the game into overtime. Syracuse entered the extra session with a man advantage, but were unable to score thanks to some nifty goaltending by GLASS. Philippe Dupuis netted the game-winning shootout marker to send the Senators home with their fifth straight loss.

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 17th vs. PHILADELPHIA (2-3 L):

Philadelphia took advantage of its first power play, as SHAWN COLLYMORE was called for hooking at 2:57 of the opening period. Eric Meloche went top shelf with his wrist shot past netminder KELLY GUARD. The Senators responded two minutes later with their own power-play tally, as JOSH HENNESSY buried his 14th marker of the season past Scott Munroe. HENNESSY took the centering feed from ANDREW EBBETT just the red line. HENNESSY smashed a one-timer to knot the game a 1 apiece. Leading scorer JEFF HEEREMA gave the Senators a 2-1 lead at 14:04 of the first period. Winger CORY PECKER circled around the back of the Phantoms cage and found a wide open HEEREMA slashing in. HEEREMA tapped the puck into the bottom right corner of the net. Phantom winger Niko Dimitrakos took over for the Phantoms. Boyd Kane handled the puck late in the second stanza, as the Phantoms had a man advantage. Kane found Dimitrakos with a cross-crease pass, and Dimitrakos snapped it into the wide-open backdoor to tie the game at 2 apiece. Dimitrakos netted his second marker, the game-winner, just a half minute into the third period. As he was skating into the Binghamton zone against the far boards, he snapped a wrist shot which bounced off of GUARD'S chest protector and hit the ice, slowly creeping over the goal line. The Senators had three power play chances in the third period, while tallying a franchise-record 28 shots, but were not able to sneak the puck past Scott Munroe.

SATURDAY, JANUARY 20th @ SYRACUSE (5-4 SOW):

The 5-4 shootout win was the first victory of 2007 for the B-Sens, as JOSH HENNESSY buried two goals to pace the Senators offense. RYAN VESCE and JEFF HEEREMA also scored in the comeback win. HEEREMA put the B-Sens on the board midway through the opening period. GRANT POTULNY fed HEEREMA a centering pass, which HEEREMA smashed from the point past netminder Dan LaCosta for his 21st tally of the season. The Crunch rattled off four goals over the next fifteen minutes, as Mark Hartigan and Geoff Platt chipped in one goal each. The Senators took advantage of an Andy Canzanello holding call at 15:01 of the second period. HENNESSY snapped a wrist shot past LaCosta on a solo rush to bring the Senators within two goals. Following a power-play marker by VESCE, the Cornell grad teamed with HENNESSY for the game-tying goal. HENNESSY passed to VESCE along the left boards, then faked a Crunch defenseman and made straight for the front of the crease. VESCE fed HENNESSY the puck, and the 21-year-old snapped it past LaCosta to knot the game at 4 apiece. After a scoreless overtime session, VESCE and CHARLIE COOK each buried shootout markers. Netminder JEFF GLASS stopped five straight Crunch shooters before HEEREMA buried the game-winner in the seventh round of the shootout. GLASS finished the night with 40 saves.

THIS WEEK: The Senators travel to Bridgeport from a Wednesday match-up with the Sound Tigers. Binghamton then heads to Worcester to take on the Sharks at 7:00 p.m. The B-Sens return home on Saturday to host Rochester at 7:05 p.m.

SCOUTING REPORT

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 24th @ BRIDGEPORT (7:30):

The Senators have won two of the last three against Bridgeport. Bridgeport comes into the game having won its last two contests. On Saturday, Dec. 9 at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena, the B-Sens buried four first-period markers in the 5-2 victory. JEFF HEEREMA buried his first marker at 1:29 of the first period, as he snapped a wrist shot past former Binghamton Senator Billy Thompson. JOSH HENNESSY and ARTTU LUTTINEN assisted on the goal. Just thirty second later, left wing BRIAN MALONEY struck with his second marker of the week to give the Senators a 2-0 lead. LUTTINEN gathered a loose puck and circled the Bridgeport goal, he then found a slashing JEFF HEEREMA moving towards the front of the net. HEEREMA slipped it past Thompson from the right post to extend the Senators lead to 3-0. LUTTINEN added his second helper of the night. The Senators took advantage of their first power play of the night. Center RYAN VESCE'S one-timer bounced off the goal post waist high, as GRANT POTULNY picked it out of the air and tap it past Thompson to give Binghamton a commanding 4-0 lead after the opening period. The Sound Tigers struck back early in the second period with a man advantage, as MIKE SGROI was in the box for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Left winger Steve Regier blasted a slap shot from the left faceoff circle past JEFF GLASS, making it a 4-1 contest. Bridgeport followed that up with a short-handed tally by Chris Campoli at 14:49 of the third period, again a slap shot from the left circle. DANNY BOIS closed out the scoring with his ninth marker of the year, an empty netter, with a minute to go in the game. HEEREMA finished the game with three points (2+1=3), as the Senators leading goal scorer took first star honors on the night. GLASS finished the night with 26 saves, as the 21-year-old earned his second victory of the season over Bridgeport.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 26th @ WORCESTER (7:00):

The Sharks are led by left wing Mathieu Darche, who has 49 points (25+24=49) for the fourth-place Sharks. Darche has 13 power-play markers on the year. Netminder Tomas Greiss has nine wins on the year, to go with his 2.46 goals-against-average and 0.914 save percentage. The Sharks have won three of their last four games, including two over rival Lowell.

SATURDAY, JANUARY 27th vs. ROCHESTER (7:05):

The B-Sens have not been able to solve the Amerks this season, as the club is winless against the upstate New York rivals. On Saturday, Dec. 23, the Amerks held on for a 6-5 win in Binghamton. The Senators kicked off the scoring as BRIAN MALONEY buried his second goal in as many nights. MALONEY took the feed from SERGE PAYER against the left boards, and snapped a wrist shot past Adam Dennis to give the Senators a 1-0 advantage. Binghamton took advantage of their first power play of the night, as JOSH HENNESSY used a backhand pass to TOMAS MALEC. MALEC smashed a one-timer from just inside the blue line past Dennis to stretch the lead to 2-0. Rochester responded with two markers to close out the first period. Left winger David Booth had a straight on rush towards JEFF GLASS, as he faked right then dipped left scooping it past the 21-year-old netminder. Drew Larman followed that up with a short-handed marker at 15:49 to tie the game at 2 apiece. Larman stole the puck from a Binghamton defender and had a breakaway, as the center went to the backhand to score the unassisted tally. The Senators struck back to start the second stanza, as winger CORY PECKER netted his sixth marker of the season to once again give the Sens' a one-goal lead. After a GRANT POTULNY goal, the Amerks reeled off four unanswered power-play markers. Two of those markers came off the stick of defenseman Andrej Sekera. SERGE PAYER added a late tally for the Senators to make it a 6-5 final, as the Senators have dropped five straight to the Amerks.
