Bears Lose 13-11 in Extras

GRANVILLE, WV - The West Virginia Black Bears were defeated in extra innings 13-11 by the State College Spikes. The Black Bears erased an eight-run deficit and both teams combined for twenty-nine hits in the ball game.

The Black Bears trailed 8-0 before they found their way onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth inning. Dylan Busby drove in West Virginia's first run of the game with a line drive single to centerfield. With the bases loaded, State College pitcher Paul Balestrieri walked in two consecutive runs in favor of the Black Bears.

State College scored one run in the top of the fifth to take a 9-3 lead. West Virginia made it a 9-7 ball game by scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Jose Barraza made the score 9-4 with an RBI double to centerfield. Sandy Santos drove in Barraza with a two-run home run to left centerfield. Tristan Gray scored the final run of the inning by driving in a run with a sacrifice fly to left field.

Raul Siri lead the bottom of the seventh inning off with a stand-up triple to centerfield and was later brought home when Spikes' second baseman Zach Kirtley committed a throwing error. With the bases loaded and two outs, Tristan Gray cleared the bases with a double to give the Black Bears their first lead of the game.

The Spikes were quick to tie the game in the top of the eighth inning. Joshua Lopez blasted a solo home run to centerfield and J.D. Crowe drove in the tying run with an RBI single to right field.

The game went into extra innings and the Spikes broke the tie when the Black Bears made a costly error, allowing two runs to cross home.

The Black Bears (35-32) will try to avoid the sweep against the Spikes (36-31) tomorrow night at 7:05 PM.
