Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, MI-The Traverse City Beach Bums won a back-and-forth game as they beat the Rockford RiverHawks in front of 3,404 fans at Wuerfel Park Wednesday night by a score of 8-6.
The Beach Bums had to make not one, but two comebacks in this contest. First, the Beach Bums had to come back from being down 2-0 after the RiverHawks scored a pair of first inning runs. Thanks to solo home runs from center fielder Greg Burns and third baseman Stephen Shults, Traverse City came back to tie the game at two after two innings. The home run by the recently-acquired Shults was his second in as many games, and the fifth he has hit against the RiverHawks this season.
The Beach Bums would add on three runs in the fourth inning highlighted by a pair of bases-loaded walks to right fielder Matt Brown and second baseman Tom Zebroski to give the team a 5-2 lead. The RiverHawks came back with a run in the fifth inning, and three more in the sixth as they took the lead for the second time in the contest by a score of 6-5.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Beach Bums would take the lead for good when Zebroski lined a two-out, RBI-double to right-center field, and first baseman Jeff Flagg launched a towering home run to left field, his twelfth of the season, to give the Beach Bums an 8-6 lead.
Beach Bums relief pitcher Matt Miller (1-0) earned his first professional win after pitching 0.2 scoreless innings on the mound. Rockford reliever Kevin Patterson (0-3) is tagged with his third loss in 2011 after allowing two runs in two innings on the hill. Beach Bums closer Scott Mueller came in and pitched a perfect ninth inning to record his eighteenth save of the season. Traverse City reliever Jeff Cinadr pitched a pair of perfect innings on the mound as well.
With the win, the Beach Bums record improves to 44-42, while Rockford falls to 34-52 on the season. Burch and Vargas led the Beach Bums with two hits in the contest.
